Twice – ‘Page Two’ Album Review

Since their debut in 2015, this nine-member group Twice has been known for its distinctively high energy music style and quirky fun image. They bring their optimism and cheerful image to play again in their latest min-album, Page Two. This is a fun album with catchy tunes and playful vibes that convey Twice’s youthfulness even more vividly. However different from their debut album, Page Two does begin to graduate towards a more mature feel in some of its tracks.

Track 1 – Cheer Upfeel4

Cheer Up starts rather calmly with a hip hop R&B groove, and then switches to dance hall style within seconds into the song. The tone changes yet again to rock pop during the chorus. Usually, this many genre mixes in a song would be disruptive, but it works well in Cheer Up. The song encourages a guy who’s in what seems to be a one-sided love to cheer up and be patient because a girl can’t give her heart too easily. It’s a track that easily gets you moving to its many rhythms.

Track 2 – 소중한 사랑 (Precious Love)feel3

Precious Love is your typical pop number with harmonious vocals and a short rap to spice things up. While the lyrics aren’t very catchy, the beat immediately draws you in and the tune grows on you after hearing it a few times. The song talks about asking a former lover to return, because they regret letting him go. My favorite thing about this song is the bass line in the background; it keeps things interesting till the end.

Track 3 – Touchdownfeel5

This track has an upbeat tune that catches your attention right off the bat. The chorus is very addicting and memorable, getting you into a dancing mood almost immediately. Touchdown is my favorite song in Page Two with its saucy lyrics and playful swing/burlesque flavor. The song is written from a girl’s perspective, and it tells the boy not to resist because he will fall for her very soon. The chorus is a countdown buttressing the point. Touchdown is in one word — fun.

Track 4 – 툭하면 톡 (Tuk Tok)feel3

Tuk Tok is a fast paced pop number with a lot of playing on the beat. Just like how Cheer Up is not done in one style, Tuk Tok is not done in one tempo. It’s slow during the verse, speeds up towards the chorus, and then slows down again. The song talks about how much they enjoy the perks and downsides of being watched by everyone. Although it’s a nice tune, it didn’t retain my attention as much as other tracks.

Track 5 – WooHoofeel3

WooHoo is a more laid back tune with smooth vocals. The song is not very catchy, but it has a few memorable parts. Twice talks about standing out and being desirable to everyone, and feeling loved because of that.

Track 6 – Headphone 써 (My Headphones On)feel4

As a perfect album closers, My Headphones On is your typical modern hip hop pop song. It has both a captivating tune and lyrics that grow on you. You’ll find yourself singing along to it in no time, especially because of its chant-like chorus. My Headphones On is a break up song that talks about being okay despite the breakup.

This is obviously a review of the digital album, because the physical album has an extra song on it, “I’m Gonna Be a Star”.
