2015 saw some of the strongest solo debuts from Kpop idol groups. Most of the debuting artists are not only industry veterans but also lead vocalists of their extremely popular groups. So needless to say how high the caliber of talent is. What’s even more impressive is that many of the solo debuts surprised us with innovative music flavors that are outside of what their groups’ are known for, thereby allowing us to get to know a whole new side of them. So without further adieu, let’s dig in.
Amber — Beautiful
f(x)’s rapper, the androgynous and quirky Amber made her solo debut in February of 2015 with an album titled Beautiful. Amber not only weaves her beloved healthy image and positive energy throughout the album but also delivers a variety of catchy tunes far outside of her usual music style. And guess what? This spunky rapper can sing! It’s a pleasant surprise to discover that Amber possesses a beautiful singing voice that’ll only make you fall in love with her even more.

Jang Hyun Seung — My
Jang Hyun Seung, also known as JS, has enjoyed much previous success as member of veteran idol group Beast and half of popular duo Trouble Maker. But this time, he chooses to use his solo debut album My to show the world what is his unique approach to music. Through the catchy hip hop and R&B tunes in My, you’ll find a dangerous, provocative, and confident man’s point of view to music.

Jonghyun — Base
SHINee‘s lead singer, Jonghyun, is known for his composing capabilities and powerful vocals. In his highly anticipated solo debut, Base, Jonghyun unexpectedly chooses to collaborate with less mainstream yet talented Kpop musicians like Zion. T and Iron that raises even more curiosity about this album. Overflowing with sexiness and manliness, Base turns out to be a mature album full of seduction. Jonghyun demonstrates with Base that he may just be too hot to handle.

Jung Yong Hwa — One Fine Day
Jung Yong Hwa, CNBLUE’s lead vocalist, makes another splash in the Kpop music scene with his solo debut album titled One Fine Day. This colorful album features a diverse set of collaborations ranging from pop rock icon Yoon Do Hyun, to rap star Verbal Jint, and even international celebrities like mandopop king JJ Lin. Upon listening, it’s not hard to notice that despite its title, One Fine Day is actually made for those with a broken heart and features a number of heart-melting melodies.

Lee Hong Gi — FM302
FNC Entertainment’s other mega power vocalist Lee Hong Gi finally made his solo debut after eight long years as the voice and soul of F.T. Island. Lee Hong Gi is typically known as a pop rock band singer with a unique voice that treads between husky and nasaly. But with FM302, he proves that he is much more than just a special voice and a pretty face. Lee Hong Gi’s creativity and talents as a composer and lyricist shine through the self-produced songs that successfully explore uncharted waters ranging from house music to synthpop.

Minah — I Am A Woman Too
The power singer behind Girl’s Day, Minah, makes a name for herself with her first ever solo album I Am a Woman Too released in May of 2015. Unlike the usual upbeat dance pop songs you might find with a Girl’s Day album, I Am a Woman Too is one captivating R&B medley that presents Minah’s maturity and charm as a solo artist.
