The remaining five members of Teen Top after L.Joe’s departure return with their second full-length album High Five, about one year from their last album Red Point. With more pizzazz and style, High Five is an album filled with tracks to suit every music lover’s taste. Teen Top experiments with mixes of genres that keep the fans asking for more.
Track 1 – Origin
Origin starts off High Five in the usual way by taking a few seconds off of the title track Love Is. Though there’s really nothing in particular to take note off, the echo-filled intro that was then ended by falsettos did make me anticipate the title track.
Track 2 – 재밌어? (Love is)
Love Is is a dance pop track with hints of dubstep infused — a textbook example of Teen Top’s signature hooky melody meets club banging backbeats. Besides the memorable chorus, the soft piano ballad like bridge followed by high notes is easily the highlight of the song, putting more power into the track as the repeated phrase “love is gone away” echoes off.
Track 3 – 손만 잡고 잘게 (Because I Care)
The next track, Because I Care, is an R&B and trap cross-over number that sounds mysteriously sexy with heavy beat echoing in the background paired with husky and manly voices during the verse. The chorus and bridge both run smoothly against the soft and calming vocals of Teen Top.
Track 4 – Call Me
Call Me is more upbeat than the previous tracks with some really fun clapping sounds to start. The bouncy track winds down a bit to give way to the rap section before starting the chorus. Call Me will get you jumping off of your feet with its playful old school-like synths and lively beat.
Track 5 – I Love Girl
I Love Girl falls on the more relaxing side compared to the rest of the album. With funky guitar riffs in the background and ripple-like distorted synths, it gives off a crisp and clean sound without an overwhelming back track.
Track 6 – 화나게 해 (Make Me Sick)
The next track, Make Me Sick is a slow R&B jam with hints of EDM. The rap parts got me hooked with a groovy swag that doesn’t overpower the whole song. Make Me Sick is a non-tiring track that you’d enjoy listening to repeatedly.
Track 7 – 7월의 만남 (July)
July is the first ballad of the album kicking off with gloomy but dreamy piano riffs. As the finger snaps come in, July turns into a suave slow jam. The high notes sound astounding while the emotions come flooding in as you listen more to this beautiful track.
Track 8 -안녕?! (High Five)
High Five sounds a bit unusual but in a good way; it sounds as if the members are talking to you as the song goes on. It has a bit of a funkiness in the guitar during the verse that is then joined by the harmonious vocals of Teen Top. What pleasantly surprised me more is the playfulness during the rap part that contrasted well to the verse.
Track 9 – 뭐가 문제야 (What’s Problem)
Whistles and a guitar strings are the backbone of What’s Problem, an acoustic-based track that sounds carefree. However, the vocals during the verse sound a bit restrained and stiff, causing a noticeable change in the composition of the track that did not help its consistency at all.
Track 10 – You And I
Water drop-like synths preambles You And I, a chill mid-tempo track with distorted synths reminiscent of the 80s. Though You and I takes a rather different path from the previous tracks to sound fresh, it doesn’t leave much impact and lacks catchy hooks for continued enjoyment.
Track 11 – Mirror
A mid-tempo pop ballad ties up High Five calmly with its laid back melancholic piano sounds and rainy flavors. Mirror is a classic go-to track for a cold thundering night if you enjoy being serenaded by silky relaxing voices.
