Taeyeon from Girls’ Generation is known all over the world for her distinct sound and crystal clear vocals. Almost a year after her solo debut album I, she returns with the aural pleasure that is Why. Unlike her previous album full of delicate sentimentality, Why has a more upbeat Kpop vibe to it, showcasing yet a different side of Taeyeon.

Track 1 – Whyfeel4

The title track Why is a soft pop rock number that talks about the future. Just as the title says, Taeyeon asks why one shouldn’t hesitate to try achieving dreams or stepping into the future. It’s a great blend of inspiration and rhythm.

Track 2 – Starlightfeel4

Starlight features an equally amazing singer Dean. It’s a love song that compares a lover to starlight. It’s a relaxing R&B tune with some late 80’s, early 90’s feel to it. The melody is an ear-wormy groovy tune that keeps you nodding along.

Track 3 – Fashionfeel4

Fashion is a funky pop track in which Taeyeon calls her lover her new fashion. The chorus is especially easy to sing along to and is a total club banger.

Track 4 – Hands on Mefeel3

In Hands On Me, Taeyeon asks her lover to put hands on her as a form of reassurance. It’s a total lovers’ ballad. While I grew tired of hearing “put your hands on me” repeatedly, Taeyeon’s voice kept me hanging in there till the end.

Track 5 – Up and Downfeel5

Up and Down is an upbeat swing number with hip hop and pop feels that talks about the emotional push and pull that comes with liking someone. The added feature of Hyoyeon’s voice makes the song doubly awesome.

Track 6 – Good Thingfeel4

Good Thing is yet another fast paced tune with the infusion of horns in just the right places. It talks about love spreading in the heart being a good thing as Taeyeon sings “give me that good thing” in her sonorous voice. It’s a catchy tune that can easily get you bopping along.

Track 7 – Nightfeel3

The concluding track is a laid-back pop tune that alludes to a time of heartbreak being like night. Night isn’t as catchy or aurally pleasing as some other songs on this album, but it does tie up the album with a nice bow.
