The mod girls of Sunny Hill are back with their latest EP album Way. It’s been a long year and half since their last album and I’m curious as ever what kind of music they’ll bring us. Sunny Hill is known for their diverse personalities in music. They sometimes gift us with bizarrely addictive tunes like Midnight Circus, and then melodic sweet ones at other times. Way was no exception. This album is structured like a musical with every song reflecting a page in a story of a determined heroine finding her way home, albeit some pages were more appealing than others.
Track 1 – Big Girls Don’t Cry
Album opener Big Girls Don’t Cry is a theatrical tune as if watching a broadway performance about a big girl being strong in face of challenges. The song is filled with drama and determination as Sunny Hill sings out the heroine’s heart. The only odd part about it is a super random EDM infused auto-tune section in the middle of the song, which seemed quite out of place compared to the overall tone.
Track 2 – 집으로 가는 길 (On the Way Home)
Title track On the Way Home seemed like a soft ballad at first, yet fast-paced rhythmic beats quickly layer on to give it a more dynamic and lofty vibe. Symphonic strings and classic instruments give the song lots of ups and downs just like the way to home would be for our heroine. Sunny Hill’s punchy and clear vocals intertwine with each other to add even more depth and sense of conviction. My only complaint of the song is the repetitiveness of the lyrics and melody.
Track 3 – Role Model
A refreshing change of tempo and style, Role Model shifts to a bumpin’ and groovy melody infused with infectious contemporary reggae elements. The lightheartedness of the electric guitar, the playfulness of the synth beats, and the flirtiness of the girls’ vocals combine to make this one hell of a fun and enjoyable song. You can’t but feel happy and rock along to it.
