Since their debut in 2014, Sonamoo generally releases only one mini-album a year and aims for quality to make sure that their albums are worth the wait. Their latest work, I Like U Too Much, is indeed a solid album experimenting many new music styles that we haven’t yet heard from these girls. Though some are hits and some are misses, this album showing off a colorful and girly concept is a new and refreshing start that we should look forward to from Sonamoo.
Track 1 – Closer
I Like U Too Much starts off with intro track Closer. Closer is more of the usual power dance pop Sonamoo song style that we’ve heard in their past albums. It’s quite strong to be an intro track with booming beat and fierce vocals. My slight disappointment comes from the fact that Closer is unbelievably short despite its potential to be a title track. It left me wishing for more.
Track 2 – 센스넘쳐 (Sense Man)
The fun starts with Sense Man with its bubbly and playful synths and beats. Though I’m a fan of the song, I think it resembles something you’d hear from a Twice album. Because of this, it makes me think that Sense Man lacks Sonamoo’s personal touch and not unique enough.
Track 3 – B.F.
With a pounding beat and some jazzy bass, B.F. turns it around with cheerful vocals and unexpected swag rap. Even more impressively, Sonamoo’s Newsun co-wrote this one-of-a-kind song. The chorus would fit well in a ballad, yet the rap sounds like it could be part of a party ditty, not to mention the vocals were just as colorful as a lollipop. This unusual combination made me want to listen to B.F. over and over again.
Track 4 – 넘나 좋은 것 (I Like U Too Much)
Title track I Like U Too Much is a summer jam that reminded me of their labelmate, B.A.P‘s song, Feel so Good thanks to the funky guitar riffs at the beginning of the song. The cheerleader chants also add more to the happy-go-lucky mood of the track. Though some stanzas felt a bit out of place because of the disconnect to the chorus, this is a different song from Sonamoo’s past albums and shows a new side of them that I really liked.
Track 5 – Sugar Baby
Sugar Baby is a softer track on I Like U Too Much with a dreamy and sweet melody. Although I do admire Sonamoo for taking the risks of singing a song that’s out of their usual concept, but this is a generic sugary piece taken straight off an album of your standard cute and sweet girl groups — nothing extraordinary.
Track 6 – I Do Love You
Ending this candy sweet album is again another feel-good dreamy track, but not as sweet as the previous song. I Do Love You plays on the synths with a bouncy beat, but I think the vocals unfortunately lacked emotion and made this song a bit lackluster.
