The sexy divas of Sistar are back with their third mini-album Shake It. Their past successes have garnered them much love and acclaim, so naturally, expectations are high for this top girl group. Yet Shake It surprisingly falls short in delivering the delight and excitement that Sistar’s previous albums did, especially the title song itself. While most of the tracks on the album are reasonably catchy, the album as a whole feels like a generic rehash that lacks a bit of originality.
Track 1 – Shake It
Shake It is a brass instruments and synth led high-energy, summery, party song with a bit of retro feel to it as well. It’s got a bright tone that makes you happy while listening to it. However, Shake It is a bit bland as a title song of the album because it doesn’t have a strong hook or a sense of newness. It’s definitely not as strong as Sistar’s past lead singles.
Track 2 – 애처럼 굴지마 (Don’t Be Such a Baby)
Electric guitar rifts, keyboard melody, and straightforward drum beats create the groovy feeling of this mid-tempo pop ballad. Don’t Be Such a Baby is easy on the ears, but also quite simple and could come across as a bit lackluster. Luckily, it’s saved by Sistar’s signature sultry and seductive vocals as they demand the boyfriend to not act like a child but a real man.
Track 3 – Good Time
Good Time sadly did not bring me the good time that it promised. This electro synthpop song has some awkwardness to the composition that’s rather distracting. When I listen to the verse, rap, chorus, and bridge separately, they’re not bad on their own. But when they’re put together, the pacing and flow of the whole song feels off, as if pieced together without consideration of each other. If I have to pick a culprit, I think Good Time could have been a more consistent song without the rap and the random tempo change that accompanies it.
Track 4 – 나쁜놈 (Bad Guy)
Bad Guy is a slow tempo ballad with sorrowful melody and heart-wrenching vocals. The melancholic piano loop and simple drum beats make up a painfully beautiful tune while an unexpected rap feature from Mad Clown dubbing as the “bad guy” adds dimension to the song. Bad Guy is easily my favorite song on this album.
Track 5 – Go Up
Go Up is an upbeat, cheery rock pop number with electro dance elements added to it. It’s one of those mindlessly entertaining tracks that ups the mood when you listen to it yet contains little uniqueness to make it a stand out song.
