After the success of their previous albums, the charming and multi-awarded ladies of Red Velvet are back with Russian Roulette. Known for their quirkiness, Russian Roulette brings us more of Red Velvet’s colorful and fun style, which will definitely aim for your heart with its catchy tunes.
Track 1 – 러시안 룰렛 (Russian Roulette)
Jumpy synths combined with some auto-tune creates the first track which is also the title track, Russian Roulette, with an 80’s-90’s feel to it. This song had a lot of potential to be great, but some parts just felt out of place making it sound plain.
Track 2 – Lucky Girl
A jazzy dance track, Lucky Girl has a very nostalgic feel to it with some hints of swing music. The track starts with an old radio effect which adds more flavor to the song. Topped off with some doo-wops and perfect vocal control, and you’ll definitely want to dance and clap along to this retro song.
Track 3 – Bad Dracula
Bad Dracula is a funky and playful synthpop track. It changes tempo throughout the song, but the chorus hooks you in with its video game-like synths and the repetition of the lyrics. Again, this would have been a great song but the stanzas and the chorus just didn’t fit each other which is a bit confusing.
Track 4 – Sunny Afternoon
Lounge-like synths, funky bass, and relaxing chimes make up Sunny Afternoon. Though the beat is mid-tempo with a playful feel to it, this track also gives off an easy-listening vibe. Other than that, Red Velvet shows off their amazing vocals in this one with some falsettos and high notes which grabbed my attention instantly.
Track 5 – Fool
Fool starts with some light guitar strumming which is then accompanied by a mid-tempo swing beat. The voices of Red Velvet are highlighted here as they sing the chorus with some catchy falsettos. This track reminds me of a bright and sunny day.
Track 6 – Some Love
A poppy, mid- to fast- tempo track follows with a summer feel to it. Some Love sounds like a Western song with all of its smooth Europop synths. This track would be the type of song you’d usually hear from their labelmate, f(x). I do adore the fact that Red Velvet is trying something new here but I feel like it just isn’t their style.
Track 7 – My Dear
The lounge-like synths are back with the last song, My Dear. This track is like Sunny Afternoon but a bit more funky with a livelier beat. Red Velvet’s vocals here sound classy which makes it different from Sunny Afternoon. With almost the same elements as the previous tracks, the only thing that made this song worth a listen is the beautiful vocals of Red Velvet.
