Hitmaker Psy is back with nine brand new tracks in his seventh studio album, Psy 7th Album. This star-studded album is packed with high-profile global music icons ranging from Pharrell Williams to will.i.am, as well as popular domestic popstars like CL and Zion.T. In Psy 7th Album, Psy shows many sides of himself through the diversity of his featured artists, but continues to go against the norms of pop culture with his quirky and comedic party tunes.
Track 1 – Dance Jockey
Dance Jockey starts off the album full of energy. It’s loaded with synth sounds and saxophone riffs. Though the song has a refreshing disco flair and catchy beats, it’s a slightly repetitive dance pop number that offers nothing more than getting people up to dance.
Track 2 – I Remember You
I Remember You is a calmer dance pop and ballad fusion song compared to Psy’s well-known hits. It features the unique, light, and airy voice of Zion.T, which enables Psy to present a different side of his music style. Psy interestingly switches up his rap delivery between sounding robotic and excited as he talks about reminiscing on a past love.
Track 3 – Bell Bottoms (Napal Baji)
Bell Bottoms is a party ditty and is the epitome of Psy’s offbeat charm. This is an absurd but catchy track about pants that only Psy could get away with. The song is led by ever-moving drums with funky horns and rhythmic guitar. It’s bound to get you moving and make you laugh at the same time.
Track 4 – Daddy
Daddy is full of heavy, high-energy synth sounds, similar to what you might find in Europop or EDM. It features 2NE1‘s leader, CL, and is actually a cool, contemporary remix of will.i.am’s hit song I Got it From My Mama. Clever lyrics is what makes Daddy a standout. The video is completely over-the-top, but I wouldn’t expect anything less from Psy.
Track 5 – Dream
Dream also features a big name in Kpop — JYJ‘s XIA. XIA’s vocals suit this mid-tempo rock ballad number very well next to the pretty piano accompaniments. Dream also exhibits a different side of Psy, having a serious undertone and meaning that discusses missing a past love and dreaming of meeting her again.
Track 6 – ROCKnROLLbaby
Up next is a song dedicated to celebrating — ROCKnROLLbaby. This party tune features will.i.am of The Black Eye Peas and definitely has a strong dose of EDM. I was actually expecting more of a rock tune due to the title, but it’s just your typical dance track without too much extra flair. ROCKnROLLbaby does have a rather catchy hook and beat though.
Track 7 – The Day Will Come
The Day Will Come is a standout song with a mesmerizing hip hop beat. It features the Jun In Kwon of the legendary rock band Deulgukhwae and is full of understated emotions. Psy demonstrates an amazing rap style in The Day Will Come flowing between smooth and syncopated rap styles that fit well with the musical embellishments. Also having a reggae undertone and trap rhythms, The Day Will Come incorporates a lot of musical styles to make it a great track.
Track 8 – Ahjussi Swag
Ahjussi Swag is yet another uptempo tune that’s supposed to be comedic, but musically, has more depth than some of the other lighthearted tracks. This song has rock elements from drums and guitars and swing flavor from the trumpets. Dynamic Duo‘s Gaeko is featured in this fun track. Ahjussi Swag is about an older man trying to dress younger than he is to be a lady’s man.
Track 9 – Sing (Psy Mix)
Sing (Psy Mix) closes out the album as an unexpected twist on a very popular global hit — Sing. The original song is by British-pop singer Ed Sheeran and American artist and record producer, Pharrell Williams. What an interesting mix of people? I am a total fan of this remix. Psy’s rapping style suits the trap-tinged backtrack nicely, and he also added new catchy hook that takes the song to a new level.
