JYP’s Park Jimin — winner of Kpop Star Season 1, MC on After School Club, and 15& member — returns with her second solo album, 19 to 20. 19 to 20 signifies Jimin’s growth, both musically and in age and maturity, becoming a legal adult. Showcasing mature and sensual vocals, this is a mini album full of amazing R&B tracks where Jimin participated in writing lyrics and composing.

Track 1 – 다시 (Try)feel4

Mixed with an acoustic guitar and Jimin’s sweet vocals, Try is an alternative R&B pop song. The track is soft and sincere but uses drums and guitar plucks to keep it moving, where it later picks up most in the chorus. The overall feel of Try is uplifting as Jimin talks about being strong despite negative comments.

Track 2 – Young해feel5

Completely changing vibes, Young해 is a lively and upbeat track with a young and fresh feel. Jimin partnered with label mate Young K from Day6 for this enjoyable number. The song has a slight retro feel similar to many Western female solo artists of the 90’s — from the synths, drums, and Jimin’s power vocals. Young해 is a feel good anthem that is bound to get anyone moving.

Track 3 – Walkinfeel4

The most stylistic song on 19 to 20, Walkin is reminiscent of Dean. This track has many trap elements giving it a slight hip hop vibe. Jimin is able to show off a more sensual, deep side to her voice that hasn’t been showcased before. Walkin features Hash Swan from SMTM5 where he was known for his lackadaisical rap style, which fits great with the vibe of this track.

Track 4 – ANSWERfeel4

Sticking with a more stylistic side, ANSWER kicks off with some echoing synths. This Futuristic R&B track discusses attempting to get answers on a relationship status. This is another track that allows Jimin to showcase her mature and sensual vocals. Jimin’s vocals and the use of the synth washes partnered with the marimba is very interesting to hear.

Track 5 – to himfeel5

Slowing things back down, to him is an emotional R&B ballad. This track is soft and full of sorrow that can be felt through Jimin’s vocal execution. There are elements in the backtrack that are very trendy and gives it a bouncy feel, even though this is a relatively sad song. to him is about trying to change oneself to try to fit someone else’s standard, but realizing one can’t change just to please someone else.

Track 6 – ANSWER (Demo Ver.)feel5

The demo version of ANSWER closes out the mini album. This is the English version of the flavorful R&B track. I prefer this version more because it is raw and in its true state. The overall vibe is more hard-hitting and Jimin’s vocals are bolder and much clearer.
