Oh My Girl is an eight member rookie group who also touts their naive and girlish image like several other girl groups that debuted in the same year. But what made Oh My Girl really stand out from the crowd is their visually stunning comeback album Closer released in October 2015. Closer commands attention with dazzling fairytale inspired concept and impressive vocals. The whole album exudes a strong sense of mystery and dreaminess unique to Oh My Girl.
Track 1 – Closer
The album kicks off with the title track, Closer. This sentimental pop ballad number is filled with full, majestic harmonies that are nicely layered with synth washes, creating a whimsical echo chamber effect. In both the music and the video, Closer paints a picture of a somewhat dark fantasy world that most other girl groups shy away from.
Track 2 – Say No More
Say No More is a retro pop R&B song that brings nostalgia from the 90’s era but is modernized at the same time. It’s a funky tune with distinctive rhythm, organic guitar sounds, and a playful vocal delivery. There are exciting key changes that I found fun to listen to.
Track 3 – Playground
Playground brings more of a cutesy vibe thanks to its upbeat rhythms and cheerful melody. There are cheeky horns partnered with drums and a tambourine that helps the track move along. Surprisingly though, this uptempo pop song tells a breakup story at the playground where the couple tries to say farewell to each other joyfully.
Track 4 – Sugar Baby
Also on the cuter end of the spectrum is Sugar Baby, another retro pop song with minor chord progressions and big band instrumentals. Unfortunately, this track has a lot of repetitiveness and doesn’t display as much character as the previous tracks. However, the lyrics are quite unexpected, comparing the boyfriend to a teddy bear.
Track 5 – Round About
Round About picks up the tempo to close out the album. It’s a high-energy dance track with bouncy swing beats and an R&B tune that is sure to get you moving. This is one of those songs that aims to bring excitement and fun to the listeners’ ears, and I think it does just that tastefully.
