Nu’est – ‘Canvas’ Album Review

Following their EDM-infused album last February, Nu’est is back with their latest album, Canvas. Canvas is a variety of ballads, EDM, and dance tracks. Using the times of the day as track titles, we can expect a day full of Nu’est’s songs putting color to the canvas.

Track 1 – Daybreakfeel4

A relaxing pop ballad track sung by Minhyun and JR starts the Canvas album. With Minhyun’s sweet voice and JR’s deep but smooth rap mixed with subtle synths and finger snaps, Daybreak is soft to the ears.

Track 2 – R.L.T.L (Real Love True Love) (one morning)feel3

R.L.T.L (Real Love True Love) (one morning), starts with some bird chirps and water drops, then turns into an upbeat track. The nature sounds and soft vocals are switched up with heavy, funky synths and Auto-Tune. This unusual combination and arrangement made me confused on what the song wants to be.

Track 3 – Love Paint (every afternoon)feel4

This mid-tempo title track has the same elements as R.L.T.L, but is more organized this time. Love Paint (every afternoon), is also upbeat but not quite as fast. The chorus is powerful thanks to the amazing vocals. The rap part and the falsetto create perfect harmony as well, making this worthy of being the title track.

Track 4 – Thank You (evening by evening)feel4

We’re back on the ballad path with Thank You (evening by evening), here to warm our hearts. Slower than Daybreak, this track has relaxing piano and subtle synths that complement the rap part which I think sounds amazing. Along with high notes and falsettos, you’d want to listen to this to calm your mind after a stressful day.

Track 5 – Look (a starlight night)feel4

Look (a starlight night) ends the album with lounge-like synths and an easy-listening melody. The synths make it sound like a party track, but Nu’est’s falsettos and vocals create a sexy pop song feel. This combination is unusual, but the elements work well together to end the album beautifully.
