Nine Muses’s first ever subunit is making its official debut this summer as Nine Muses A with four members. Nine Muses A is short for Nine Muses Amuse, with the intention that the subunit will always bring you enjoyable music and performances. Indeed, their debut album Muses Diary contains energetic upbeat sounds that are not only catchy but also full of futuristic outlook.
Track 1 – Your Space
A trendy and futuristic sounding trap beat Your Space opens the Muses Diary album with the girls’ voices echoing and reverberating the line “I wanna live in your space”. It’s a dramatic yet powerful opening, teasing the listener on what’s about to come.
Track 2 – 입술에 입술 (Lip 2 Lip)
The title song, Lip 2 Lip is a fast-tempo new wave electro dance number with the cheerfulness of Melbourne bounce and a hint of retro in its rhythms. Produced by the same producer from their Drama album last year, it’s full of Nine Muses flavor. The girls are incredibly synchronized in their vocals and conveyed a flirtiness particularly felt during the chorus of the song.
Track 3 – 쉿! (Shh!)
Shh! Is equally powerful and energetic following suit to Lip 2 Lip. But Shh! feels less dynamic and more “by the books”, likely due to the rhythmic percussion drum beats. It’s also got electric guitar elements and a strong string section filled with dramatic violin sounds, conveying a sense of danger. Though a bumpin’ song, the melody seems a lot more predictable.
Track 4 – Monster
Next up Monster changes up the mood a bit and slows down the speed. Though it’s got a hip hop beat as the baseline, it’s actually a pop ballad with a catchy opening synth, complex piano riffs, and impressive acoustic guitar lines. The girls’ vocals also get to shine in this track with bigger variations of tone and pitch, while portraying a sense of loneliness.
