The latest subunit of multinational group NCT recently released their debut EP, NCT #127. NCT 127 is the second subunit to debut from SM’s newest boy group, NCT (Neo Culture Technology), where 127 represents the longitude of Seoul. Although NCT 127 just debuted, they have a distinct sound that marries hip hop with pop-dance fusion, showcased in this album which peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s World Albums chart.
Track 1 – Fire Truck
With a booming futuristic opening, Fire Truck is a colorful, loud hip hop number. Powerful bass leads the fusion of many rhythmic elements. Several of the members helped write the Korean lyrics for Fire Truck. This title track definitely makes a statement for NCT 127.
Track 2 – Once Again
A pop song with an R&B foundation, Once Again changes gears with a cute concept. Once Again starts off with what sounds like a comedic game show tune in the opening. Along with a retro sound, there’s a modern sense of harmony supported by sweet vocals. NCT 127 members Taeyong and Mark Lee were involved in creating the rap for this track.
Track 3 – Wake Up
Mysterious charms sound off to set up a peculiar atmosphere. Unique vocal tones creep in to further build an even more individualistic sound in Wake Up. An electro-pop feel picks up during the bridge and towards the chorus with a pumping beat. NCT 127 prove that they are strong contenders in the electro-pop genre.
Track 4 – Another World
Another World continue with the unique and futuristic sounds, but adds more of an upbeat hip hop vibe. This track dons an urban sound with great synth fluxes. Another World focuses more on the rappers, but still has strong and dreamy vocals that work together well.
Track 5 – Paradise
Focusing on the vocals once again comes Paradise. It’s a mid-tempo, urban pop song that features a faint guitar in the backtrack. This track proves that NCT 127 have solid vocalists, but the song is repetitive during the chorus and has no true climax. Paradise is a nice song that appeals to the masses but loses the edginess compared to the other tracks on this mini album.
Track 6 – Mad City
Mad City is without a doubt a rap track with an addictive club beat. Mark Lee and Taeyong helped with lyrics again on this song. While listening you can hear the crew has something to prove with their rap skills. I would have liked to hear them ride the beat a little more, though. However, there are definitely spots that shine in Mad City.
Track 7 – Switch
Featuring SR15B, SM Rookies 2015 Boys, Switch closes the mini album. This track has a tropical, electronic house feel. The drums and xylophone partner well with the message of hope that Switch has. This track is bright and cheerful and the perfect song to listen to on a breezy summer evening.
