FNC, known for its global rock band hits like F.T. Island and CNBLUE, brought us their third male idol rock band last year — N.Flying. Though N.Flying is new to Korea, it has already accumulated familiarity through their earlier 2013 debut in Japan. After a successful debut album Awesome earlier in the year, the boys are back with their latest extended play, Lonely. Lonely can best be described as a refreshing album with many twists. In a short three tracks, Lonely is able showcase N.Flying’s unique modern approach to music by adding other trendy elements that breathe new life into pop rock.
Track 1 – Lonely
Album opener and title track Lonely certainly gives off the bittersweet and regretful emotions as suggested by the title of the track. I was expecting more of a rock pop flavor from N.Flying, but was pleasantly surprised with not only bluesy piano riffs, but also a mid-tempo hip hop rhythm and edgy rap that gave the song an interesting spin.
Track 2 – Knock Knock
Knock Knock is an upbeat electronic rock number with synthpop elements mixed in. The blazing guitar and bass instrumentals as well as intense drum beats work together to infuse the song with such boisterous high energy that it makes you want to jump along to the beat.
Track 3 – 뻔뻔 (Shameless)
Lonely ends on a rare combination of punk rock paired with aggressive rap and vocals. The toughness and grunginess of rock music in Shameless is closer to what I would have expected to hear from N.Flying. I really dig the fierce bass guitar instrumentals, especially the solo riff towards the end of the song. However, the flat melody of Shameless does wear on me after a few listens.
