Debuting in March, this new seven-boy group from PH Entertainment released their first album, Manifest, produced by Avenger Seung, who’s known for producing hit songs for girl groups like S.E.S, Brown Eyed Girls, Nine Muses, and Kara. This would be the first time that Avenger Seung works with a boy group, a fact that made MVP special among rookie debuts. Though not perfect, Manifest is a powerful and statement-making album that shows MVP’s tough spirits.
Track 1 – Manifest
Manifest starts the album off mysteriously with a dance instrumental that includes hints of trap music. The mid-tempo power-beats match well with the boys’ sharp dance moves to prove that they are not just ordinary newbies.
Track 2 – 선택해 (Take It)
Take It is an uptempo dance pop and hip hop cross-over track that combines old with new. It’s a high-energy and booming number with synthesized turntable scratching sounds and a retro 80s backbeat that brings back nostalgia. For newbies, MVP pleasantly surprises us with their stable vocals and edgy raps.
Track 3 – 눈물뚝 (Don’t Cry)
Calmer than the title track, Don’t Cry is a pop ballad with gloomy piano and guitar riffs. Though the harmonization in the chorus sounds beautiful, the overall track came off as a tad bland with no notable parts.
Track 4 – 끝까지 들어 (Hear Me Out)
Hear Me Out begins with mellow acoustic guitar sounds and then turns into a mid-tempo dance track. The anthem-like bridge makes Hear Me Out dynamic and playful, which provides a great auditory contrast to the otherwise soothing tune. It’s the perfect song for a summer getaway.
Track 5 – 자기전에 전화해 (Late Night Call)
Pounding rhythmic beats welcome us to Late Night Call with nostalgic 90’s like synths. The jazzy bass guitar riffs in the verse are oddly relaxing when paired with MVP’s sweet vocals and falsettos. However, while I enjoyed listening to it at first, I soon grew tired of it.
