After Minzy unfortunately left 2NE1 and their label YG Entertainment, all eyes were peeled on what Minzy would do after that. What types of songs would she sing? What genre of music does she prefer? The problem is, she had barely any chance to showcase her talent as a solo artist under YG Entertainment, so we couldn’t know for sure. However, all curiosity should be satisfied with the release of Minzy Work 01. Uno, her foray into being a solo artist. It is an album that goes to so many unique places while maintaining Minzy’s passion and artistry.
Track 1 – 니나노 (Ni Na No)
Ni Na No feels like a song that is freshly made in Bollywood with strong tribal elements. The fierce, dance-inducing beat filled with booming horns certainly gives that impression. Although the flatter melody doesn’t allow Minzy to show her full vocal potentials, Ni Na No is nonetheless a swag-filled power girl song that few in the industry can pull off as effortlessly as Minzy has.
Track 2 – Superwoman (수퍼우먼)
Superwoman is a meek yet empowering song that is a suitable antithesis to the infectious energy of Ni Na No. The melody is stripped to the minimum, allowing Minzy to let loose her raw emotions without getting overwhelmed by a strong beat. Whenever she chants “I’m Superwoman” in the chorus, I have chills running down my spine, and I feel inspired to become a better person. Superwoman is a song that makes listeners refreshed and rejuvenated.
Track 3 – ING (알쏭달쏭)
ING is a laid-back ditty, reminiscent of the early days of contemporary R&B, that has a feeling of wistfulness behind the loud melody. I am somehow reminded of The Black Eyed Peas song Don’t Lie whenever I listen to it; maybe it’s because of how similar Minzy’s seemingly casual style and tone of voice is to the band’s lead singer Fergie.
Track 4 – Flashlight
So far, Minzy Work 01. Uno has been quite good, so any mistake can ruin the flow of the album. Flashlight is where that mistake is at. Jay Park’s feature in this song is unnecessary, as the slow, sultry mood set by Minzy’s voice is cut off by his fast, passionate rap. Besides, this song has a stereotypical R&B beat, so it doesn’t fit in with the originality of the others.
Track 5 – Beautiful Lie
Beautiful Lie is, truly, beautiful. I have never seen Minzy do ballads as a solo artist before, but now that I have heard one, it’s something that she can do extremely well. Through her rather deep vocals, she infuses her own flavor into this ballad, which involves the usage of orthodox instruments. Despite this, it’s hard not to appreciate the melancholy Minzy expresses here, serving as the exception to the rest of Minzy Work 01. Uno in terms of mood.
