Known as the girl group with the most successful debut in 2014, Mamamoo is here to amaze us again with their perfectly synchronized, jazzy vocals with the R&B album, Melting. Writing the songs by themselves, your heart will surely melt when you hear this album, which topped the U.S iTunes Kpop Chart and gave them their first music show win with the song, You’re The Best.

Track 1 – 1cm의 자존심 (Taller than You)feel4

A very Eminem or Dr. Dre hip hop type of song because of the heavy beat and the synths. Taller than You is a new genre that Mamamoo explores in this album. We know Mamamoo as the group with power belting vocals, but surprisingly their voices also work well in the hip hop genre. Though it’s quite repetitive, it’s also oddly catchy with a sense of witty humor.

Track 2 – 우리끼리 (Words Don’t Come Easy)feel3

Words Don’t Come Easy is a soothing song with an acoustic guitar that blends nicely with Mamamoo’s signature vocal style. This is the type of song you’d usually hear inside a music lounge or coffee shop, letting you sink into a relaxing mood. But, it’s kind of forgettable compared to the other tracks in Melting.

Track 3 – 넌 is 뭔들 (You’re The Best)feel5

You’re The Best, the title track of Melting, has a retro feel with a modern kick. It’s a creative song that has a packed soundstage with multi-layered instruments, a jazzy melody, and a thumping backbeat. This unique and well-composed tune also gave Mamamoo their first ever win on Inkigayo.

Track 4 – 금요일밤 (Friday Night)feel4

Junggigo joins in with his smooth R&B vocals in this collaboration track. An easy listening song, Friday Night minimizes instrumentation during verses to highlight the singers’ performances. It eventually builds into a powerful chorus with overlapping harmonies and sweeping violins. It’s an enjoyable song that has a hint of playfulness.

Track 5 – My Hometownfeel3

My Hometown is a bossa nova type of song that sounds a bit like Maroon 5‘s She Will be Loved with its light guitar picking. It’s very soothing, but doesn’t really stand out besides a few sharply delivered rap sections.

Track 6 – Emotionfeel3

With full piano chords and light synths, Emotion sounds a bit like Day6‘s song Habits in the beginning. Even though the sweet falsettos and strong rap work well, it’s mostly a standard pop track.

Track 7 – I Miss Youfeel3

Starting off with some somber piano and finger snaps, I Miss You is a power ballad track that showcases the girls’ high notes, which I really liked. It might not get stuck in your head for long, but there’s no denying the power of Mamamoo’s delivery.

Track 8 – Funky Boyfeel4

Going back to retro, Funky Boy is an energetic jazz dance track that will get you out of your seat. The vocals boast confidence and have a bit of a commanding tone. It’s got a catchy beat that will make you feel energized throughout the day.

Track 9 – 나만의 Recipefeel4

Recipe is yet another blast to the past with a groovy melody that you’d usually hear in old black and white TV shows. It’s a quirky combination of blues, jazz, and hip hop that even throws in a bit of scatting.

Track 10 – 고양이 (Cat Fight)feel4

Cat Fight is an upbeat, swing style jazz track full of fun piano scales and lively brass sections. It feels like a song that you’d hear from the 1930’s and ’40’s, with people dancing in their zoot suits and flowing dresses.

Track 11 – Justfeel5

Dreamy synths and a soft beat make Just a perfect song to get lost in with your own thoughts. With a slow tempo punctuated by Mamamoo’s powerful, belting high notes, it can make you feel both soothed and moved at the same time.

Track 12 – Girl Crushfeel3

Ending the Melting album, Girl Crush is a fun and peppy song with a bit of jazziness. You can feel the girls having a good time and being a bit silly, but it doesn’t leave a strong lasting impression.
