After only slightly more than a month since their debut, Loona’s first sub-unit Loona 1/3 has returned with a re-release of their first album, Love&Live, titled Love&Evil. In stark contrast to Love&Live’s infectious energy, Love&Evil has more of a serious atmosphere. The new tracks in this re-release set Loona apart from most rookie girl groups, having sophisticated, well-produced melodies that are nostalgic and remind us of the yesteryear. In fact, the new tracks are, arguably, more interesting and unique than the original tracks in Love&Live.
Track 1 – Love & Evil
Love&Evil is a short yet grand introduction to the album, featuring an impressive orchestra to back it up. It feels so theatrical and dramatic, increasing your anticipation for how the rest of the album would sound like. It would be even better if this was a full-length song featuring Loona’s vocals.
Track 2 – 알 수 없는 비밀 (Sonatine)
As can be predicted from the intro, Sonatine is polished and lavishly ornamented. It has the air of a song from old Europe, spotlighting the majestic violin, strong piano chords, and even the harmonica that seemingly came straight out from France. It is an exotic listening experience that is different from what we would expect from a girl group, justifying its role as the title track.
Track 3 – 비의 목소리 51db (Rain 51db)
Rain 51db has the mystic vibes of a song in the debut days of many pioneer girl groups such as Girls’ Generation, or even a group as early as S.E.S! Take a journey back in time with the classic jingle sounds that are reminiscent of the innocence of such girl groups, the memorable rhythm and pace that is easy to sway along to, and of course, their sweet vocals that are like a dose of heaven.
