After experiencing a tragic and painful loss of members, Ladies’ Code finally makes their return as a three member act two years later. Their all new mini-album, Myst3ry, presents three new tracks that are full of creative genre mixes and abstract symbolisms. They signify the girls walking out of the shadows of the past and looking out into the unknown future. Myst3ry is an album that feels eclectic musically and thought-provoking intellectually.
Track 1 – My Flower
Just like its title, Myst3ry begins with a dreamy and mysterious slow tempo ballad track My Flower. The addition of water drop sounds and short violin strings to the overall dramatic and haunting melody creates an even more enigmatic atmosphere. Ladies’ Code’s breezy vocals echo throughout the song to paint a beautifully bleak picture of flowers withering and blooming in a repeated cycle.
Track 2 – Galaxy
Title song Galaxy brings out yet a different kind of fourth dimensional mystic that is rarely heard in Kpop. Using an unexpected mix of R&B, jazz, and modern neo-soul elements, the song embodies the loneliness and confusion of stars that have lost their way in the galaxy, symbolizing Ladies’ Code’s own questions and uncertainties towards their future.
Track 3 – Chaconne
Chaconne is a type of musical composition popular in the baroque era in Europe, with a signature short harmonic progression. And the album closing track Chaconne is indeed a bluesy ballad that leverages this type of exotic and whimsical melody, modernized with acoustic guitar and violin strings that exude full-on sorrow. The girls’ soft vocals blends perfectly into the heart-wrenching tune as if to transcend a sad Shakespearean play in front of your eyes.
