The fun and bubbly ladies of Laboum is keeping up with their cheerful image with their second mini-album, Miss This Kiss. Containing six tracks that fully pump up the party mood, Miss This Kiss helped Laboum secure their first ever music show win. Although the album showed inconsistencies, it’s nonetheless a funky pool of fun for listeners.
Track 1 – Intro
Game-like synths serve as the intro of the album. The intro track started out a bit dreamy at first then turns retro as the beats joined in. It also felt like road trip or summer getaway themed music that did a great job of amping-up the mood.
Track 2 – 휘휘 (Hwi Hwi)
Hwi Hwi, the title track of the album, features fun and flirty whistles teamed up with funky retro synths and jumpy piano chords that appear every now and then. Still, the main highlight of the song is the catchy whistling that will have you doing the same after listening to it.
Track 3 – Story Travel
Funky horns and jazzy big band sounds fill the next track. Story Travel is upbeat like Hwi Hwi, but the backbeat is not as jumpy. Featuring 50’s swing and jazz, this track sounds classic and modern at the same time. At the end, the beat changes abruptly to end the song, leaving me wanting for more.
Track 4 – 빛이 되어줘 (Be The Light)
A sweet pop ballad comes next, giving us a breath of fresh air after the upbeat party tracks. Nonetheless, Be The Light has that typical girl group vibe with its dreaminess and chimes that accentuate the cute feeling. The highlight of the track is the playful rap that didn’t sound out of place at all. However, this is a safe track that doesn’t stand out too much from the sea of similar songs.
Track 5 – 천지차이 (Heaven and Earth)
After the slower paced track, the mood goes back up again with Heaven and Earth, a pop number with overwhelming, in-your-face synths. The big band sound is present again along with the booming beats and sweet vocals, which didn’t really complement each other. Heaven and Earth is like a mixture of random sounds put together to create a song that sounded jarring.
