It’s been three years since Hyolyn’s last solo album, and she finally breaks the long hiatus with her latest album It’s Me. It’s Me contains six tracks, all of which flaunt both Hyolyn’s powerful vocals and versatility across genres. What’s also impressive about It’s Me is that Hyolyn has contributed significantly to the its production, writing the lyrics for the majority of the songs. Overall, It’s Me is an EP with soulful R&B songs, blithe party anthems, and emotional ballads all in one place.
Track 1 – Paradise
Paradise is a brisk, pop-based track with a tropical feel. With Hyolyn’s dreamlike vocals and the saxophone as a key embellishment, it’s impossible not to bob your head along to the cheeky melody.
Track 2 – Love Like This
This number starts with the soothing effect of the piano, indicating that this song will be of different style than the previous one. Love Like This is a groovy R&B track that shows the lovey-dovey side of Hyolyn — a great accompaniment to the sensual side of her that was highlighted in Paradise. Dok2’s nonchalant rap is definitely able to contribute to the carefree vibes this song imbues.
Track 3 – One Step
One Step, similar to Love Like This, is a pleasant, friendly-to-the-ears R&B number. Hyolyn’s arresting vocals, together with Jay Park’s smoldering singing, make this song suitable to be listening on a slow, hot summer night.
Track 4 – 꺼져 (Go Away)
Go Away takes a sharp turn away from the happy-go-lucky mood of the previous songs into the darker side of Hyolyn. While the beginning of this song may make you think that it’s going to be a lounge-like tune, it’s actually not meant to be. This element of surprise is what keeps listeners on edge until the end of the song. Hyolyn’s haunting vocals, and the astonishing chord progressions, will take listeners on one emotional rollercoaster of a song.
Track 5 – Slow
Slow, unfortunately, is a ballad that is just slow, with no unique elements. What makes matters worse is that this song is just after Go Away, which is such an impressive song, further accentuating its inferiority. Finally, Jooheon’s rap felt out of place, and his raspy voice just does not match well with Hyolyn’s honey-sweet vocals.
Track 6 – Dope
As the name of this song suggests, Dope, is, well, a great song. The EDM beat at the beginning of this ditty will catch attention, since it is way louder than the slow, soulful songs that precede it. The constant flux in the beat, as well as the vivacity and zest of Hyolyn’s singing, will definitely get listeners back for more. Dope is a fun, jumpy track that acts as a stunning closing to this album.
