GOT7 are grown-up guys in their latest mini-album, Mad. The international septet is back with a fiery sound that’s completely different from their previous release, Just Right. Mad is a very listenable album that does a great job of presenting the members’ maturing musical talents. GOT7 shows that they’re not afraid to explore new sounds and genres, or change their music perspective and flair.
Track 1 – 니가 하면 (If You Do)
I was surprised about GOT7 opening Mad with such a bass-filled pop dance track with a hint of anger, but If You Do turned out to be my favorite tune from these boys so far. They previously explored a dark sound with Stop Stop It, but If You Do is much more mature. GOT7 is talking to a girl that mistreated them during a relationship. There is even a unique spoken English part that adds to the song and makes you want to side with the boys in this struggling relationship.
Track 2 – 손들어 (Put Your Hands Up)
Put Your Hands Up has a very bouncy beat with whistles throughout that adds an energetic feel to the track. I like that the verses are not really sung, but more chanted, which makes it more of a hip hop track. However, the repetitiveness of the lyrics in the chorus with no octave changes or other things to spice it up makes Put Your Hands Up a little boring. The lyrics talk about how GOT7 are arresting a girl that isn’t aware of how she makes guys feel, but they want to lock her up for themselves.
Track 3 – 느낌이 좋아 (Feels Good)
Feels Good makes me feel good while listening to it. It’s a urban pop song that blends strong synth bass and unique beatbox sounds together to make you move along to the rhythm. I am a big fan of GOT7’s rap in this song. The raspiness in their voices are intriguing and contradicts the smoothness of the background music.
Track 4 – Good
Good is a good track to show off GOT7’s singing abilities. The vocals are not in your face at all and start in a lower range than normal with subtle rifts and falsettos mixed in. The background instrumental has a nice groove to it with hints of disco and funk music. The lyrical content is about confidence and I definitely think the boys should be confident about Good.
Track 5 – 눈이가요 (Eyes On You)
Eyes On You starts out with a soulful piano intro but completely changes the feel of the tune within seconds. Powerful drum beats and synth sounds turn Eyes On You into a contemporary hip hop track that is extremely saucy. My favorite part is the unique bridge showcasing a singing rap with vocalists sprinkled on top later on.
Track 6 – Tic Tic Tok
This isn’t the first time the boys have talked about going after a girl they find attractive, but the delivery of Tic Tic Tok is far more mature and seductive, nearly reminding me of ex-lablemate Rain. The never-ending bass and beats in the background help define Tic Tic Tok as a deep house track. The chorus is constantly repeated, but the fact that a different vocalist sings it each time adds flavor.
