To celebrate their five-year debut anniversary, Girl’s Day drops their second studio album Love this summer. Love is a collection of 14 tracks, of which the majority are previously released songs that we won’t be reviewing here. As far as the new tunes go, they’re largely upbeat dance numbers that not only match the cheerful summer vibe, but also give your ears and hearts a dose of delight.
Track 1 – With Me
The album opener With Me is an unusual dance pop song infused with tango rhythm. Clean and heavy drum beats give it the fast tempo while winding violin riffs create a melody full of Latin American aura. Add on top charismatic vocals from Girl’s Day, the whole song feels very theatrical, as if watching a dramatic play.
Track 2 – 링마벨 (Ring My Bell)
Ring My Bell is a high energy, bright dance pop number with a hint of retro flavor. The melody is straightforward but quite catchy, especially coupled with Girl’s Day’s powerful vocals. However, it’s also got a myriad of percussion instruments, harmonica, electronic guitar, and synths mixed together in the background that sound rather overwhelming and dominant over the girls’ voices.
Track 3 – 마카롱 (Macaron)
Funky saxophone, bouncy cello, and fluid piano riffs build the foundation of this playful uptempo jazz swing track. Macaron has a particularly fun melody that puts you in a good mood, just like when you’re enjoying a sugary macaroon. The girls sweet vocals also add to the contagious happy energy to round it out as my favorite track on the Love album.
Track 4 – Come Slowly
In contrast to the previous songs, Come Slowly tones down the high energy into a heart-warming ballad with soft piano and acoustic guitar instrumentals. Besides the pleasant melody, Girl’s Day’s voices really shine through this song — smooth, soulful, and full of color.
Track 5 – Top Girl
Here comes the EDM track that we’ve all been waiting for and it’s honestly a tad disappointing. Sure, it’s definitely a catchy tune meant to make anyone dance along, but the melody and vocals are nearly buried by the pounding beats. To quote one of JYP’s favorite sayings — Top Girl also feels a bit “old” and sounds like a rehash of an early 2000’s Koyote song.
