Gain – ‘End Again’ Album Review

Gain of Brown Eyed Girls is back with latest half album End Again. Gain is a critically acclaimed artist who is known for her drama and daringness, particularly among Kpop artists. With every EP, she not only attempts drastically different (though not always popular) music genres, but also tells an exceptional story (though not always minor appropriate). This time, Gain leads us into a retro and nostalgic world, where we meet Carrie, experience a carnival, and meet the firefly fairy. This highly experimental album is something I’d love to see more of in the Kpop industry.

Track 1 – Carrie (The First Day)

End Again begins with a number rarely heard in Kpop that reminds me of a retro old school broadway musical you’d hear in the 1930’s. The composition of Carrie (The First Day) is jazzy, swingy, full of trumpet and percussion sounds. Though the backtrack may sound bouncy and optimistic, the main melody in minor key does contain a hint of sentimentality. I’m particularly a fan of the chorus where the unexpected yet flavorful progression make it seem like Gain is softly telling the sad story of a less fortunate heroine from a black and white film.

Track 2 – Carnival (The Last Day)

Up next is Carnival (The Last Day), which begins with a dramatic and exceedingly theatrical melody completed by a full-on symphony. Then, enters a slew of carnival like playful synths, jingles, and bouncy trumpet notes. This time, I feel like I’m watching a classical musical show where a magician and his crew perform various tricks on stage to cheer up the audience. While the song paints a vivid picture creatively, it’s nonetheless too niche for repeated listening.

Track 3 – 반딧불이의 숲 (The Forest of Fireflies)

Gain takes the “show” in yet another direction with The Forest of Fireflies. This is a much softer and whimsical ballad backed by melodic piano notes. Not unexpectedly, it’s got quite a bit of sentimental vibe and sorrowful drama, particularly during the bridge. But again, the musical composition and chord progressions are refreshingly creative. As if a fairy is singing deep in the forest, Gain’s gentle and airy voice delivers a heartwarming monologue.

Track 4 – 비밀 (Secret)

Secret represents more of the passionate and sexy Gain that we’re used to from previous albums. However, she adds a wistful ballad twist to the usually seductive Latin flamingo tune orchestrated through beautiful acoustic guitar riffs. Her smoldering vocals tells an emotional midnight summer’s love story.

Track 5 – Begin Again (Inst.)

End Again symbolically ends with an instrumental number called Begin Again. It intentionally puts the album through a full circle as Gain monologues “my name is Carrie”, which ties into the first track. The symphonic violins and trumpets play out a mellow yet dramatic tune, as if a play is about to start.
