Solji, the main vocalist of EXID, is sadly taking a break from group activities due to her unfortunate heath issues. However, despite this major disadvantage, EXID has come back strong as a quartet with Eclipse. As the album cover implies, Eclipse is a simple yet ingeniously produced album, having your favorite hip hop tracks to the slow, stylish bops you might need once in awhile. Eclipse is an excellent paragon and summary of EXID’s discography.
Track 1 – Boy
Boy is a sophisticated, laidback contemporary R&B track ideal to chill out to at a party in the late hours of night. What’s particularly unique about this therapeutic tune is that it features electronic doo-wops in the chorus. Boy is dynamic and makes the best use of the various elements within it, giving the vibes of someone desperate for love.
Track 2 – 낮보다는 밤 (Night Rather Than Day)
Night Rather Than Day is a song fit to be performed at a fancy five-star restaurant owing to its jazz influences. However, EXID blends their stylish hip hop flavor into the mix to spice things up. Despite not being as iconic or thought-provoking as Boy, it’s nevertheless a song that flashes the elaborate, lady-like side of them very well.
Track 3 – How Why
How Why rends your heart without being overly sentimental. I like how the song tries to be cheerful (especially during the vibrant chorus) to try to cover up the sadness that lies deep within the lyrics; it’s a stellar metaphor to how we try to hide our inward feelings from others. It marries modernity and tradition with ease.
Track 4 – 우유 (Milk)
Turning the mood down is a profoundly melancholic R&B track that puts Hani’s warm and rich vocals in the center of attention. Milk creates a gloomy ambience through the use of doleful guitar strums and listless finger snaps — a perfect background for Hani’s sonorous croons.
Track 5 – Velvet
Acting as a perfect companion to Boy is a sensual solo track by LE, the group’s rapper. Luring people in is a simple yet dreamy melody that truly represents LE’s darkest fantasies. Velvet is definitely not a song for the masses, but there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, it allows LE to show a side of her that is not seen through EXID’s well-publicized title tracks.
