Block B – ‘Blooming Period’ Album Review

The crazy hip hop boys of Block B are back with their latest album Blooming Period and a more suave image after their activities in Japan. I would classify Blooming Period as a rare album from this group, as we know that Block B are usually wild guys with a bad boy image. The BBCs surely did accept the change as their title track, Toy, gave Block B their music show trophy with Blooming Period debuting at No. 1. Mostly written and composed by the talented Zico, let’s discover a brand new Block B as they bloom in the music industry.

Track 1 – 몇 년 후에 (A Few Years Later)feel4

A Few Years Later sentimental song starts the album with some mellow acoustic guitar and a heartbeat-like rhythm. It has a gloomy feel to it, where even the strong and powerful low voices of the rappers sounded sad. The song suddenly ends with Taeil’s sweet falsetto along with subtle synths, leaving a lingering impression.

Track 2 – Toyfeel5

With a heavy bass and echoing beat, the title track Toy is no joke with Block B’s signature swag. Toy sounds a bit like a song that Big Bang would sing, with a Western flair that’s especially notable in the chorus. Toy is a great transition from a hip hop to gentlemanly concept because of its perfect balance between not being too crazy and not being too sentimental.

Track 3 – 사랑이었다 (It was Love)feel4

It was Love is a remake by Taeil of a song originally sung by f(x)‘s Luna and produced by Zico. Taeil takes a shot at this sentimental lullaby-like, piano-accompanied song. I have to hand it to Taeil — he really made this song his own, singing his heart out in falsetto to reach the high notes, which I really liked.

Track 4 – Walkin’ In The Rainfeel3

I really feel like I’m walking in the rain because of the raindrop-like piano chords complemented by Block B’s cool voices. This combination gives Walkin’ In The Rain a relaxing feel. A lot of falsettos can be heard here from Taeil, but there’s unfortunately not as much from the low vocal rapper, P.O; I think it would have been really nice if P.O’s rap was longer, thus creating a better balance between sweet vocals and spicy rap.

Track 5 – 빙글빙글 (Bingle Bingle)feel5

The last track on Blooming Period brings back Block B’s familiar swag. Sung by Bbomb and U-Kwon, Bingle Bingle features some heavy bass and a pounding beat which is more like what we heard from sub-unit Bastarz. Upon listening to this album, you’d definitely be looking for Block B’s usual flavors, which is why I think putting Bingle Bingle as the last track is a clever way of reminding the fans of what they do best.

Track 6 – 몇 년 후에 (A Few Years Later) (Inst.)
