The February music videos roundup is a packed list that includes many heavy hitters in both groups and solo artists. And we’re already noticing a few trends happening in Kpop music videos for 2017 that can be seen in the first two months of releases. The MVs either feature fun colorful tints in what appears to be Instagram filters, tell playful retro stories, or take on full-on dark drama. Let’s dive February’s music videos below in the order they were released.
Zion.T – The Song
The Song has an eccentric video to go along with an eccentric track. The video is accentuated by vibrant neon color sets and costumes. There is a swagged out mad scientist vibe throughout as Zion.T cooks up concoctions of experiments. There isn’t any standout camera work or special effects, but the MV is full of magical nonsense that makes it one-of-a-kind.
Red Velvet – Rookie
Red Velvet never fails at bringing unique concepts, and Rookie is no exception. This colorful video can be summed up to one description – a bizarre show of sorts. The girls are led into a magical world, a la Alice in Wonderland, by a flower covered creature. Once in the world, the girls sport retro inspired outfits as they execute sassy choreography alongside gaudy sets.
1NB – Stalker
Stalker is the pre-debut song of a new three-member girl group, 1NB. This MV is basically a short film drama with high production value, being a little shy of nine minutes. Stalker has a very dark and eerie undertone showing scenes of intense nightmares, creepy ghosts, and mysterious investigation of a murder case. The horror elements help tease the viewer’s appetite about what’s really going on.
NCT Dream – 마지막 첫사랑 (My First and Last)
NCT Dream comes at us with an age appropriate video in My First and Last. The MV is set in a school and follows the group as they talk about their love interest, a female teacher. The plot and storyline is great, but what makes this a standout MV is the choreography. NCT Dream displays their synchronized moves as well as some pretty stellar floor work in the school gym.
BTS – 봄날 (Spring Day)
The music video for Spring Day is a mixed bag of emotions; there is a sense of regret and joy at the same time. The video is both colorful and muted at the same time, as if showing members retracing a trip to reminisce about shared memories from the past. The one notable thing that has many people talking is the huge mound of clothes the boys are seen sitting on. This MV seems to pick up where the Epilogue: Young Forever left off.
BTS – Not Today
BTS gives power to the underdog in this action packed MV. The landscape and camera work in this music video are really breathtaking. In very BTS fashion, the choreography is extremely detailed, sharp, and full of swag. The most memorable scene is the boys and backup dancers dancing in perfect synchronization on a giant block of ice. This is indeed an intense video to match a powerful song.
B.I.G – 1.2.3
B.I.G bring us a funky and fun music video in 1.2.3. The video is 80s inspired as the boys wear vintage clothes and have a good time chasing the lady of their dreams. There is a filter over the entire video that also gives it a retro feel. The boys are also able to show their comical side as they fight each other for a better view of the girl on TV, with their special feature — pet monkey.
Melody Day – Kiss on the Lips
Melody Day allows us to escape the cold weather with this hot summery reggae-inspired track and MV. Kiss On the Lips focuses mostly on the sassy and fierce, yet easy to follow, choreography. The fun and flirty outfits fit with the tropical scenes and accentuate the girls body’s. This simple video is certainly a nice breath of air.
Krystal + June One Kim – I Don’t Wanna Love You
Just like 1NB’s Stalker, Krystal’s new collaboration single has an equally dark vibe, but in a classic black and white horror movie a la Alfred Hitchcock kind of way. The beginning of the MV shows long haired Krystal slowly and quietly crawling out of a small living space, reminding you of a scene from The Ring. Then as the hipster lounge beat drops, we see a story of jealousy, burning fire, suffocation, and dual personality come in. I think Krystal is trying to describe the relationship pains of loving someone in a very artistic and visually daring way.
K.A.R.D – Don’t Recall
The music video of Don’t Recall is relatively simple and straightforward with most camera angles switching back and forth between the choreography against minimalistic color-tinted backgrounds and solemn sitting scenes in opulent settings. But what makes this MV memorable is how well the choreography is timed to the beat and groove of the song, making it hard to take your eyes off of K.A.R.D’s each and every move.
Kim Jin Ho – Graduation Picture
This creative MV utilizes cartoon drawings to tell a heartwarming story of two best friends. The story begins with the graduation pictures of a yearbook, and follows our characters through their high school years together, displaying a great deal of shared happiness and friendship. But as they part ways after graduation, we begin to see the pressures of adult life and the longing to relive the good old days. The best twist of the MV is at the end, where we find out that each scene is actually based off a real picture about the singer and his best friend.
Dean – 넘어와 (Come Over)
Come Over is one of the most distinctive music videos currently out and depicts a dream. The entire video is animated in what appears to be a sketch book. People are represented as squiggly drawings which adds to the peculiarity. The video seems to be set in space from the contents of the lyrics, hints of the opening and closing scenes, and snapshots of people wearing space helmets at times.
Twice – Knock Knock
Twice’s Knock Knock video is a continuation of the TT video, following a similar fairytale theme. The MV is rather unique with its adorable stop-motion clips of their girly choreography against vibrant hues. Knock Knock is very feminine, youthful, and cheerful video. The girls are gathered at a slumber party, having a pillow fight, and waiting excitedly for someone (Peter Pan?) to come knock on their door and bring them to dreamy fairytale land.
Junggigo + Chanyeol – Let Me Love You
Junggigo and Chanyeol’s Let Me Love You tells another amusing and endearing love story through a retro lens. On a set filming for the classic power rangers movie, our couple meets. The boy is dorky and clumsy antihero dressed in a bug custom who is immediately drawn to the girl in the pink power ranger suit. As time goes on, their relationship blossoms into a sweet romance that warms your heart as much as the tender, loving tune itself.
Lovelyz – WoW!
The music video for WoW!, a pop track with a slight retro feel, really matches the energy of the song. Lovelyz are able to show their cute and girly side as they dress in vintage outfits. The great camera work and the girls being two-dimensional paper dolls add an interesting and quirky mix to the MV. During close up shots, the makeup and stickers plastered everywhere are over the top, but also adds to the character of the MV.
Gugudan – A Girl Like Me
In addition to the vivid colors already seen in a number of music videos, the MV of this high-energy dance pop ditty gives identity and character to each member. As you watch the artist, vblogger, business woman, and model all flaunting their confidence, coupled with the girls’ sassy dance, you really feel that the point about girl power in the song hits home.
