April brings us many dreamlike music videos that feature wide angles and stunning colors. Creative editing is essential for these music videos as they help move the storyline along. Buckle up for an emotional ride as we hop into April’s best Kpop music videos in the order they were released.
Oh My Girl – Coloring Book
Coloring Book by Oh My Girl starts off overly cute and completely white. As the video progresses color is added through various editing techniques. The more color that got added the more eccentric the MV became. The use of a green screen added plenty of quirky elements as well.
Winner – Fool
Winner brings an emotional track, and video to match, in Fool. This MV is full of beautiful scenes with a nice mixture of closeups and wide shots to help tell the story. With the soft lighting and slow motion editing effects, Fool gives off an overwhelming sense of lonely solitude.
Dreamcatcher – Good Night
Good Night is an edgy, dark, fairytale-like MV that is a continuation of Dreamcatcher’s previous title song’s storyline, where the girls are being chased into the woods by a frightening man. This is a high energy music video that has a killer choreography. The coloring and camera work should also be noted along with the spot-on costuming. They allowed the group to be feminine and fierce at the same time.
Gaeko + Rap Monster – 코끼리 (Elephant)
Get ready for a thought-provoking animated journey. Elephant, by Gaeko featuring Rapmonster, is the representation of an internal struggle depicted through a visit to the dentist gone wrong. As the dentist gets deeper in the main characters mouth, more insecurities begin to surface and the colors in the MV become dark. Once the character begins to see what they are capable of, the MV takes a much brighter turn.
Day6 – 장난 아닌데 (I’m Serious)
I’m Serious is not your typical video you would expect to see from a band and definitely not an MV style we have seen from Day6 yet. This MV is liberating with a definite summer vibe, showing Day6 enjoying themselves and having a good time. There are amazing wide shots of nature, including scenic views of the ocean and mountains. The colors seem to be natural as well, with no overdone filters.
Babylon + San E – Ocean Drive
Babylon is pushing us into summer with a laid-back outdoor MV for Ocean Drive. The camera work is fantastic as there are many stunning wide angles and ariel views. The colors are also amazing as they flow between bright and subtle, just like the song itself. The storyline follows the lyrics to a T as the MV shows a couple that feel like they are the only ones in the world.
Ten – 夢中夢 (몽중몽, Dream in a Dream)
Dream in a Dream is whimsical and extremely artistic music video. The MV is saturated with bright hues, starting out with deep pink and purple hues that later changing into greens, blues, and even black that poetically symbolize various emotions. The mesmerizing dance choreography and colorful changes flow perfectly with the oriental sounds.
Zico – She’s a Baby
A sweet and tender boy confessing love for his baby girl in this R&B lullaby, She’s a Baby has an equally charming and expressive music video to match. The eye-catching pastel hues and jewel tones along with the CG renderings of minimalistic contemporary architectures give the MV a modern aesthestics akin to that of an art museum.
Laboum – 휘휘 (Hwi Hwi)
Laboum greets us with a bright and colorful MV in Hwi Hwi. Despite the sets being relatively basic, Laboum shines through with their girly yet impactful choreography with the whistle gesture being the key point of the dance. The cheerful and polished MV shows more of the member’s personalities and is bound to put a smile on anyone’s face.
Minzy – 니나노 (Ni Na No)
Ni Na No is Minzy’s solo debut, and she comes out fierce. This MV is quite pleasing visually and never gives your eyes a break. Ni Na No is choreography heavy, but the standout set is Minzy dancing in the mirror, allowing you to see multiples of her. There are several costume and set changes, but none of that detracts from the true focus on this MV, Minzy and her fantastic dance moves.
Yesung – 봄날의 소나기 (Paper Umbrella)
Paper Umbrella‘s MV quickly establishes a subtle but visually compelling contrast between the past and the present. The past is presented in a warmer, more optimistic vintage tone reminiscing the good happy memories of a teenage couple. The present on the other hand, gives off a grayer somber and lonely mood. The downpour is the consistent theme, but the characters’ emotions are entirely different, making for a heart pinching story to watch.
Reddy – Supreme
Supreme is a low key hip hop MV with natural sets leveraging many iconic LA locations, including a Supreme store. What sets this music video apart from other videos in this genre is the animated character that is practically Reddy’s shadow. There are other animated elements throughout to the effect of Snapchat filters that add interest to the video as well.
IU + G-Dragon – Palette
IU teams up with G-Dragon to reveal her coming-of-age story through Palette. The video shows different aspects of IU’s life and references her past career achievements as she plays games and explores different styles. The cool Instagram layover effect and chill vibe of the music video matches the laid-back feel of the song very well.
K.A.R.D – Rumor
The music video for Rumor is relatively straightforward, the are basic camera angles on a grungy set. What makes this MV most memorable, is the portrait video format, as it is specifically formated for a mobile device. Like always, K.A.R.D’s choreography is on point and the focal point of the MV. The video is set in shadows, but there are nice pops of color throughout to compensate.
