Every idol group has a great vocalist, dancer, and pretty face, but many of today’s idol groups also wouldn’t be complete without a rapper. Some of them are simply given the ‘rapper’ position in their group, but many others actually started in Korea’s underground hip hop scene, which gives them even more street cred. Here are the first 10 of some of the best idol rappers that deserve all of the recognition.
Zico
Zico, leader and rapper of Block B, appeared as one of the main producers/judges on the fourth season of Show Me The Money. That alone proved that he was ahead of the game and respected in the Korean hip hop world. Getting his start in the underground scene, Zico has proven his rap and production skills time and time again.
Miryo
Miryo is a member of the mature and sassy girl group, Brown Eyed Girls. She is also a veteran rapper, composer, and lyricist in the Kpop industry. She has a feminine yet raw delivery compared to other female rappers. If you need more proof of her talents, Miryo has been slated to be a contestant on the upcoming season of Unpretty Rapstar 3.
Yong Jun Hyung
Yong Jun Hyung, also known as Poppin’ Dragon, is the primary rapper of Beast and is well known in the industry for his talents. Not only has been creating music for Beast since they debuted, he’s also been frequently featured as the rapper in many collaborations with artists such as G.NA, Wheesung, and Hyuna. With a unique style and much swagger, check out Jun Hyung’s skills for yourself in his solo track Flower.
Bobby
Bobby of iKON, a newcomer and rising rapper, has caught the attention of many in a very short amount of time. He is not only a rapper, but also a lyricist known for his creativity with words. Bobby proved his talent when we won the third season of Show Me The Money. Appearing in other survival shows, WIN: Who Is Next and Mix & Match, which formed iKON, Bobby has proven time and time again that he is one of the best idol rappers around.
Yezi
Yezi, the underdog of Unpretty Rapstar 2 surprised everyone with her fierceness, earning her the nickname “crazy dog”. Since her appearance on the show, she has gained the respect of many. Yezi’s badass attitude and rapping skills gives her serious edge above other female idol rappers. She was able to show off her unique charisma in her first solo album, Foresight Dreams with a cohesive rebellious theme and tough sound throughout.
Bang Yong Guk
A member of underground hip hop group, Soul Connection, Bang Yong Guk is also the leader and main rapper for standout idol group, B.A.P. Known for his distinctively deep voice, Yong Guk ranks supreme over many other idol rappers. He also helped compose the majority of his groups’ tracks.
Lee Joo Heon
Lee Joo Heon of Monsta X is a rookie to the Kpop industry but his sick rapping skills are obviously remarkable. He impressed many top rappers and producers with his appearance on Show Me The Money. Joo Heon’s flowing verses in Monsta X’s songs are some of my favorite rap verses from any idol group.
Cho Seung Youn
Cho Seung Youn is a rapper and vocalist in new but rising idol group Uniq. The fact that he can speak four different languages gives him an advantage in his rap delivery and lyric composition. Seung Youn was recently featued as a contestant on Show Me The Money 5, where he gained respect for his rapping skills from judges and fans alike.
LE
LE is not only the main rapper of EXID, but also a singer and songwriter. Possibly overlooked as she is a member of a girl group not known for hip hop music, but LE is a real MC. She made her rapping debut as ‘Elly’ in underground rap crew, Jiggy Fellaz. LE also made an appearance on the second season of Show Me The Money as a contestant.
Song Min Ho
Currently the main rapper of YG’s Winner, Song Min Ho is no stranger to the rap scene. He was once the rapper in idol group, BoM and was said to be one of the original members of Block B but left the group before they debuted. Min Ho proved that he’s not just your ordinary idol rapper with his appearance on Show Me The Money 4, where he got as far as being the runner-up. Beyond rapping, Min Ho also has production credits in a lot of Winner’s music.
