The boys of B1A4 released their sixth mini-album Sweet Girl this summer after about a year of hiatus. B1A4 has a distinctive music color that can’t be copied, even when experimenting with new genres and concepts. Therefore, although Sweet Girl is full of fresh sounds and new endeavors that are pleasing to the ears, it is still full of B1A4’s own flavor.
Track 1 – Sweet Girl
Title song Sweet Girl is a funky disco number with rich orchestra instruments like piano and violin that add sentimentality to the song. The chorus of Sweet Girl is highly addictive even if it’s a bit repetitive because of the boy’s heart-melting vocals and the smooth melodies. The music video helps bring the song to life even more with sweet choreography.
Track 2 – You Are a Girl I Am a Boy
Having a totally different presence than the last track, You Are a Girl I Am a Boy is a pop rock song where B1A4 sings about not wanting to be just friends with a girl anymore. Vintage guitar riffs are prevalent throughout the track, which is refreshing to hear from B1A4. Rhythmic drums also help move the song along by increasing the speed and slowing it back down.
Track 3 – 10년 후 (After 10 Years)
After 10 Years is a mellow ballad song, but showcases B1A4’s vocal ability with a belting chorus. The low piano riffs and airy vocal harmonies give After 10 Years a sad vibe that’s completely different from the first two songs. The rap timing also fits well with the overall progression of the song and adds more layers of emptiness. There is a nice rise and fall of the melody and vocals throughout the song that creates dimension.
Track 4 – Wait
Wait starts off with lonely piano chords and Baro singing in a low voice — first time that a rapper kicks off the track with vocals! Wait then proceeds to a sorrowful British pop styled chorus sung in a very syncopated rhythm that isn’t common among kpop ballad songs. The unique rhythm coupled with a melancholic harmonica solo made Wait exhilarating to hear at first. However, I started to get bored halfway through because the melody stayed pretty much the same afterwards and I would have liked more of a climax.
Track 5 – Love is Magic
Love is Magic has to be the most intriguing song on this mini album because the main verses are rapped instead of sung. The track starts off with a soulful keyboard and continues with R&B vocals and hip hop beats throughout the song. I am very impressed with B1A4’s layering of ad lib vocals over their rap that makes Love Is magic a tune with depth. What a great way to close out the album!
