Kpop is quickly becoming mainstream not only in Asia but also in other countries. As the number of fans increases, the demand for new music are increasing all the time too. This often leads idols to team up with other artists to provide fresh tunes to their fans. Now, let’s take a look at some of our favorite idol collaborations to date.
Lollipop
Bigbang + 2ne1
We’re starting off the list of idol collaborations with two of Kpop’s leading veteran idol groups from YG. Big Bang’s powerful hip hop swag combined with 2NE1’s funky and fun electro dance style resulted in a colorful and futuristic song called, Lollipop. Filled with Big Bang and 2NE1’s unique style, the melody and the MV are splatter of rainbow colors. The song easily became a huge hit in Korea and topped the GAON monthly chart in 2009.
S.E.O.U.L
Girls Generation + Super Junior
Two ultra popular groups come together to promote their own country. Girls’ Generation and Super Junior show us that it’s fun to fall in love in Seoul with their collaboration track, S.E.O.U.L.The song and the MV not only showcases the talented SM artists, but also the breathtaking view of the city. From the parks to the shopping areas, one can never be bored with life in Seoul. Though made for driving tourism in 2009, we can’t quite leave out this amazing collaboration that is as beautiful as the city itself.
Troublemaker
Hyuna + Jang Hyun Seung
Ex 4Minute member HyunA teamed up with labelmate, ex Beast member Jang Hyunseung to create a seductive and killer duo — Troublemaker. At first, their same name title track gained criticisms from music shows due to the overly sexy choreography. After Cube Entertainment changed it to be more suitable for broadcast, the duo became an instant hit. Their matching sensual vocals and provocative moves were widely accepted by fans and gave them numerous awards as the best collaboration in 2012.
눈물샤워 (Shower of Tears)
Baechigi + Ailee
This is one of my most favorite collaboration tracks as the song is so melancholic and beautiful it hurts. Shower of Tears is an emotional mid tempo hip hop ballad track by Baechigi featuring Ailee. We all know Ailee for her soulful voice full of power. When pair with the strong rap of Baechigi, this track became an instant hit. An it earned Baechigi their Hip Hop Star Award from the Golden Disc Awards in 2014.
썸 (Some)
Soyou + Junggigo
Some may be one of the most successful idol collaborations in recent years brought to us by the two Starship artists Soyou and Junggigo. This flirty and addictive duet gained worldwide popularity and is a favorite track to be covered by everyone including Kpop artists. With consecutive wins on major Kpop music shows and topping Gaon charts for two weeks, Some is hard to beat. It also became number one on Billboard Korea Hot 100 for six weeks straight, making it the longest chart streak in 2014.
Delicious
Nam Woo Hyun + Key
When you combine spicy and husky voice with sweet and smooth vocals, you get Toheart. In 2014, SM Entertainment announced a cross agency duo consisting of Infinite’s main vocal, Nam Woohyun and Shinee’s lead rapper, Key. The duo join hands to make a funky song titled Delicious that earned them praise for their amazing charisma. Toheart’s unexpected team-up gave them their Popularity Award in 2015 and led them to release another song, Tell Me Why.
Dream
Baekhyun + Suzy
If you wish to fall in love or just feel relaxed, you might as well listen to Baekhyun and Suzy’s collaboration song, Dream. This track was released beginning of 2016 and continued on as number one not only in digital charts but also in physical album sales for three consecutive weeks. This jazz and neo-soul tune will make you feel like you’re on cloud nine. It’s as sweet and cozy as a cup of hot chocolate on a cold day.
Everytime
Chen + Punch
We certainly wouldn’t forget the song that made everyone’s heart flutter during scenes of hit drama Descendants of the Sun. Exo’s main vocalist Chen and female vocalist Punch worked together on the OST track titled Everytime, that was hugely popular in first half of 2016. Chen and Punch’s soothing yet powerful vocals just sounded so beautiful in this heartwarming melody, which led the track to top the charts the moment it was released.
Fly
Jessica + Fabolous
Former Girls’ Generation member Jessica made her solo come back earlier this year with a refreshing collaboration with hip hop artist, Fabolous. This dreamy song titled Fly highlighted Jessica’s soft and silky vocals. Meanwhile, Fabolous’ strong yet smooth rap paved its way to the top of charts and helped the song garner 2 million views on Youtube within 24 hours of its release. Jessica’s album were sold-out so fast that they had to produce more due to popular demand.
