With Kpop gaining popularity worldwide, it seems that everyone wants to get on and surf the Hallyu wave. The Kpop music industry has been on a roll already debuting tons of rookie groups and soloists, while many experienced idols also made solo debuts to chase after music that they can call their own. Let’s check out some of the best debuts for the first quarter of 2017.
Ravi (VIXX)
Ravi, a member of the concept-dol group VIXX, has already been recognized as the primary writer and producer of his group’s songs. The aspiring idol rapper has released a number of mixtapes and collaborations last year, but finally made his officially debuted as a solo artist with his first self-produced mini-album, R. EAL1ZE. His strokes of genius can be felt in this terrific album that includes four brand new songs as well as three tracks from his mixtape R.EBIRTH. It’s easy to feel Ravi’s sincerity as he works hard to create a profound and original color to call his own.
Dreamcatcher
Minx, a five-member girl group that debuted in 2014, added two new members and re-branded themselves under a new name, Dreamcatcher. The fans, old and new, helped in promoting the group by translating their teaser schedule to different languages. Their debut single Chase Me drew much attention with its distinctive heavy metal rock sounds similar to what you’d hear from a Japanese anime, and its horror-themed MV that’s intense and captivating to watch. Case in point, Dreamcatcher’s debut single quickly reached over two million views on YouTube, an accomplishment that’s difficult to reach for most rookie groups.
Seohyun (Girls’ Generation)
SNSD’s Seohyun is know for her amazing vocals and strong performances in musical shows. In January 2017, she finally made her long-awaited solo debut following the footsteps of fellow Girls’ Generation TTL members Taeyeon and Tiffany. Seohyun makes a stunning and sultry solo debut with Don’t Say No, an album that she played a large part in. Seohyun was able to showcase her individuality, in a somewhat unexpectedly mature yet chic way. Don’t Say No is retro gone right, with unique, sizzling, and aurally alluring R&B tracks lining the entire album.
Suzy (Miss A)
Suzy of Miss A goes solo with her debut EP, Yes? No?. After focusing primarily on other solo activities such as numerous CF projects, acting, and singing drama OSTs, the all-around entertainer is finally giving fans a taste of her music. Definitely taking a whole different path from her bandmate Fei’s sultry debut, Yes? No? shows Suzy’s sophistication and depth, with soft and captivating tracks that show a more delicate side of Kpop. The public and charts certainly received this all-new side of Suzy with full open arms.
1NB
A three-member rookie girl group is coming into the spotlight with their unique debut. Usually, girl groups would have a clear concept of what they are and what they aim to be through their MV’s, be it cutesy or sexy. And it seems like 1NB likes to do it differently. The group released their debut single titled Stalker in February, produced by Real Men, who are known for their works with TVXQ. The MV has a music drama format that runs nine-minute-long with a dark horror vibe that is out of the ordinary, and hypes up the fans for their next releases.
MVP
Debuting in March, this seven-boy group from PH Entertainment released their first album, Manifest, produced by Avenger Seung, who’s known for producing hit songs for girl groups like S.E.S, Brown Eyed Girls, Nine Muses, and Kara. This would be the first time that Avenger Seung works with a boy group, a fact that made MVP special among newbie debuts. Indeed, the group’s title track Take It did not disappoint. This uptempo dance pop and hip hop track combines news sounds with a retro 80s backbeat and a note-worthy choreography to match. MVP pleasantly surprised us with stable vocals and edgy raps.
Pristin
Debuting under the Pledis Entertainment, the company that brought us amazing groups like After School and Seventeen, everyone’s been hyped up with the official debut of Pristin via album Hi! Pristin (previously named Pledis Girlz). Some members havel already gained popularity through reality survival show Produce 101, and debuted under I.O.I. Needless to say, Pristin is likely one of the biggest girl group debuts of this year. Pristin’s debut single Wee Woo, a playful dance pop track shows off their girly and energetic vocals, certainly put them on the right track.
