2PM made their comeback with their sixth Korean studio album on September 13 with Gentlemen’s Game. The album was released as a celebration of their eight year anniversary together and is also their last release before military service. Through Gentlemen’s Game, 2PM was able to show off their producing skills, writing the lyrics and composing the majority of the tracks on the album. With unique colors and a mature and masculine style, 2PM has a solid album here for music fans to enjoy.
Track 1 – Promise (I’ll Be)
Kicking off the album with the title track is Promise (I’ll Be). This track begins with a mellow vibe and emotional vocals, but as the song progresses, more elements com in to spice it up. In the chorus, fancy synths are introduced with an urban jazz vibe and hints of the future bass genre. Promise (I’ll Be) is also catchy with many lines ending with “I need you right now.” This is definitely a track I would come back to listen to.
Track 2 – Uneasy
Changing vibes slightly, Uneasy begins with a troubled atmosphere. There is a profound echo throughout this track which adds to the character. The chorus is a bit repetitive, but it still adds to the eerie feeling of Uneasy. This song stays in line with the future bass elements from the previous track.
Track 3 – Giv U Class
Giv U Class has an extremely sexy feel from the first sound that hits your ears. Besides flaunting solid vocals, 2PM were also able to showcase a talk-singing rap style. With sensual synths, guitar riffs, and trap elements, the members were able to show what sets them apart from other Kpop groups with a mature and sophisticated sound. Giv U Class is a simple melodic production that keeps you coming back for another taste.
Track 4 – Make Love
Make Love is a soft and soulful number, very reminiscent of original R&B boy bands of the 70s and 80s. With whisper-like vocals, you can feel the passion oozing from sweet croons. The high ranged vocals with the baritone rapping flows effortlessly together and adds to the smoothness of Make Love.
Track 5 – 시도때도없이 (All Night Long)
Sticking with more of an R&B vibe, All Night Long is a slow modern hip hop track. With a dreamlike, yet unique, instrumental, 2PM is able to showcase their rapping and singing ability nicely. All Night Long has many elements happening at once while managing to stay chill and sophisticated.
Track 6 – Never
Never is a mid-tempo soulful and smooth R&B track with an addictive beat. Accompanied by a nice piano and drum kit balance, 2PM shows a tender side while remaining masculine. All of the elements in Never come together to form a very solid track that also allows the vocalist to show strong belts when needed.
Track 7 – 콧노래 (Humming)
Taking on more of a rock and pop vibe, Humming is next. Humming has soft vocals partnered with light guitar plucks. The rap section is memorable, however there isn’t a lot that makes this track distinct. Humming doesn’t stand out compared to the tracks surrounding it.
Track 8 – 어때? (Shall We?)
With a funky and upbeat rhythm, Shall We? brings back the future bass elements from earlier songs on the album. This is your typical 2PM feel good dance track. With exciting trumpets and pop song elements, Shall We? will definitely be playing in dance clubs.
Track 9 – 향수 (Perfume)
Perfume starts off with a futuristic heavy beat followed by gentle vocals. This smooth track has flair from synths, brass, and horns. Perfume also has many rise and falls throughout. However, it gets lost in the mix due to other distinct tracks on Gentlemen’s Game.
Track 10 – My Last
My Last is the most ballad-like. This is an urban R&B number with trap-like drum patterns. With rich melodies, a nice groove, and superior falsettos, My Last is set to serenade anyone that listens to it.
Track 11 – Can’t Stop Feeling
Can’t Stop Feeling is another feel good song which closes out Gentlemen’s Game. A very colorful ditty, Can’t Stop Feeling has a funky rhythm with a jazzy and soulful vibe. 2PM gets help from trumpets, piano, drums, and guitars to keep this party going. Can’t Stop Feeling has a catchy chorus and great ad libs that are easy on the ears. This song would be great on stage with a live band. It’s a solid track to close out this well made album.
