We recently featured some of the most impressive choreographies by Kpop boy groups in 2016. The wonderful performances would not be complete without the sassiness and charms of the girl groups. Idol girl groups were all about simple and quirky moves, hints of sex appeal, and fancy formations and line changes in 2016. Check out our picks, starting with 8 of the most memorable girl group choreographies in 2016 (not in ranking order) for your viewing pleasure.
Twice – Cheer Up
JYP’s Twice always releases dynamic and memorable routines. Cheer Up has many spunky moves but is a bit cuter than their debut release Like OHH-AHH. The routine starts off with the members’ pretty faces being watered and sprouting like flowers. Cheer Up is full of big arm movements and the ever so popular “shy shy shy” step. Twice makes anyone want to dance and have fun with them in this unforgettable routine.
Gfriend – Rough
Gfriend’s choreography is never suggestive, in fact a lot of their movements are rather boyish which is why their choreography is always memorable. Rough grabs your attention from the start with a vertical line and the peel off to reveal each member. There are many modern dance style moves that add to the freshness of the routine. The ending is also noteworthy with another signature vertical line with a clock ticking motion to once again reveal the members in a peel off.
Wonder Girls – Why So Lonely
Why So Lonely is a routine that shows how long the Wonder Girls have been around in the Kpop scene. The choreography is clear and smooth but is full of flavor. The dance steps are mature and seductive but not over the top sexual. The flowing choreography goes with the vibe of the track. The Wonder Girls don’t need an overcomplicated dance routine to prove themselves.
I.O.I – Very Very Very
Very Very Very is very cute and charming just like the girls of I.O.I. This is an uplifting and age appropriate girl group dance where each move rocks well with the beat. If you want to follow along it’s easy to do: just ball up your fists, place them in front of your face, and move back and forth. Don’t forget your pouty but cute face!
Oh My Girl – Liar Liar
Liar Liar has to be the cutest choreography without being overly cheesy. Oh My Girl remain in sync and appear to have fun while doing so. The movement for “liar liar” is the most notable and the most popular. I really enjoyed the stage placements as well, the different groupings were interesting.
Black Pink – BOOMBAYAH
Black Pink made a highly anticipated debut with two tracks, one of those being BOOMBAYAH. The choreography is fast paced and slightly provocative with plenty of hip thrusts. But the members exude badassery through their powerful and full out moves. A piece of the choreography that was highly discussed is when one member crawls on her back under the other members’ legs. The power behind this choreography is definitely stunning.
Red Velvet – Russian Roulette
The always quirky Red Velvet entertains us with another great routine in Russian Roulette. This routine has a lot of hip shaking and even some whacking thrown in. Russian Roulette is a fun routine to watch and dance along to. The choreography is also popular for boy group members to dance to as well.
Brave Girls – Deepend
One of the few sexy hip hop routines of 2016 goes to Deepend by Brave Girls. The choreography is simple but mesmerizing and full of confidence. Displaying thighs of steel, a lot of the moves accentuate the girls’ bodies. The dance is full of steps that fans can follow along with. This routine is one of my personal favorites of the year.
