As an avid fan of the Call of Duty series, it won’t surprise anyone to know that the reveal trailer for the most recent entry, Infinite Warfare, made me excited. Although I haven’t extensively played an entry since Modern Warfare 3, between every CoD title since Modern Warfare I’ve easily spent hundreds of hours playing my favorite FPS series. And while this new title makes me excited for the future, I couldn’t help but notice that Call of Duty has slowly become more like the Halo series in the past few years.
Starting with Modern Warfare, one can see the series’ steady evolution from modern military shooter to futuristic, sci-fi shooter over the course of its many iterations and advances. When I first saw Advanced Warfare, I joked that the series had become “Halo-lite” but I thought nothing more of it; but now, Infinite Warfare is just begging for comparisons to Microsoft’s star franchise. Note: this is just a jest between a gamer and the series he grew up with — no offense is intended!
Exhibit A: Is that a Pelican?
Right off the bat, the trailer treats us to some faux security footage of an airship of some sort flying through a city. Now, I ask you, does that not look exactly like a Pelican dropship from the Halo series? Right down to the quad engine design, it’s a spot-on lookalike.
Exhibit B: Okay, that’s a Phantom.
Alright, I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the Pelican lookalike, but this thing is a little too on the nose for my tastes. Seriously, this ship from the Infinite Warfare trailer is a Phantom, no doubt about it. Who wants to take bets on whether or not Infinite Warfare actually tells the story of the Covenant’s first attack?
Exhibit C: Jorge? How’d you get there?
This fella here is undoubtedly Jorge from Halo Reach. Now, what he’s doing in the newest Call of Duty title is anyone’s guess. Time travel? Is Doctor Who a special guest?
Exhibit D: Alright, that’s just a stolen scene.
I mean…do I need to talk about this one? This is the last nail in the coffin in my book. This whole launch sequence, if it makes it to the final game, is like watching a higher resolution version of that same launch sequence from Halo Reach.
In conclusion, Call of Duty is Halo now, and I’m totally fine with that. I’m really looking forward to next year’s title, Call of Duty: Spartan Warfare.
