For every great Kdrama, there is an equally awesome soundtrack. They turn otherwise ordinary scenes into great emotional moments that viewers cannot forget. Without further ado, here are some of the most memorable Korean drama OSTs for us.
Taeyeon – 만약에 (If)
Hong Gil Dong (2008)
This is SNSD Taeyeon’s soundtrack debut and it’s a great one that sets her up for an ongoing pipeline of drama OSTs since then. This is a beautiful ballad with a wistful melody coupled with Taeyeon’s crystal clear voice to convey a heart-melting monologue of the fears of being in love. It’ll tug all the right chords in your heart as you watch the drama’s adventurous plot.
Baek Ji Young – 잊지 말아요 (Don’t Forget)
Iris (2009)
Baek Ji Young is known as the drama OST queen for a reason, she’s created so many hits over the years. But perhaps one of her most famous number is Don’t Forget from popular drama Iris. The song’s quietly sorrowful melody and Baek Ji Young’s melancholic vocals work together to paint a heart-wrenching tune about what it means to live, love, and be separated by death.
Kim Tae Woo – 빗물이 내려서 (Dropping Rain)
Personal Taste (2010)
While this drama was by and large a romantic comedy, there were some angst-filled scenes that this song punctuated perfectly. Kim Tae Woo is no doubt a veteran singer who knows how to bring out the emotion in any song as he rightly executed with this song. For a well made drama like Personal Taste, this soundtrack was the proverbial icing on the cake.
Kim Bum Soo – 나타나 (Appear)
Secret Garden (2011)
This soundtrack became one of Kim Bum Soo’s most famous and cited songs thanks to the drama’s popularity. It’s upbeat tempo and happy vibe matches well with the drama’s body-switching premise and the joy of meeting a fated love. Kim Bum Soo’s powerful vocals carries out the hero’s determination to capture the heroine’s heart.
Ulala Session – 굿바이데이 (Goodbye Day)
Bridal Mask (2012)
Although this song has a stronger rhythm and beat than a traditional ballad, it’s got a hauntingly bewitching melody and sorrowful lyrics. Even the average non-Korean speaking person can relate to the bitterness, sadness, anger the song is trying to convey all at once. Viewers who are familiar with this song will agree that it is one of the most ear-wormy soundtracks in Kdrama.
Homme – Moment
The Heirs (2013)
This soundtrack is another aurally appealing ear worm that sticks whether or not you want it to; especially the first line of the chorus. This song was used to highlight nearly every moment between our lead couple, so it was near impossible for it not to stick. This song is especially memorable because of Changmin and Lee Hyun’s dazzling voice and synchronized harmonies.
Lyn – My Destiny
My Love From the Stars (2014)
Lyn has always been respected for her vocal ability and versatile music style; so it is no wonder that this song is such a hit. Like most drama OSTs, this song is a sentimental ballad. It takes approximately one listen to be hooked for a long time as the catchy chorus pairs perfectly with each emotion-filled scene.
Jang Jae In & Nashow — 환청 (Auditory Hallucination)
Kill Me Heal Me (2015)
The dreamy piano intro, intense rap, and haunting vocals add up to an incredibly distinctive song that immediately captures your attention just like the drama itself. The anguish felt within the rap is a perfect manifestation of the hero’s frustration at his lack of control of his multiple personalities, while Jang Jae In’s whimsical voice symbolizes his salvation through our heroine.
Gummy – You Are My Everything
Descendants of the Sun (2016)
This is no doubt the hottest OST of 2016 from the hottest drama of 2016. It quickly topped various charts. Not only is this ballad well composed with distinctive hooks, Gummy’s smooth yet powerful vocals bring out all the pent up emotions. The song’s melody rises and falls windingly much like our lead couple’s relationship throughout the drama.
