As a diehard fan of romantic comedies, and someone who appreciates a good laugh, there are a group of actresses that always bring me joy and put a big smile on my face whenever they appear on screen. These comedy queens effortlessly make you fall in love with them and look adorable even in the most ridiculous scenes. Without further ado, here are eight of the best Kdrama comedy queens that you can’t miss.
Hwang Jung Eum
Anyone who has seen any of Hwang Jung Eum’s dramas will admit that she is one of the most iconic and over-the-top comedy actresses in Kdrama today. Everything from her exaggerated facial expressions, to her silly mannerisms, and flustered dialogue delivery is engaging. Some of her recent notable works in the rom-com genre include Kill Me, Heal Me, She Was Pretty, and Lucky Romance.
Jun Ji Hyun
Jun Ji Hyun is no doubt the “lifetime goal” for a lot of female Kdrama fans. She’s got the proverbial nine yards with a beautiful image, a successful career, and her gift for comedic acting is the cherry on top. Jun Ji Hyun established herself as the original of comedy queens with hit movie My Sassy Girl. In recent years, her dry sense of humor also helped make Kdramas My Love From the Star and The Legend of the Blue Sea global sensations.
Park Bo Young
Park Bo Young has turned into a rom-com sensation in recent years with her incredibly adorable acting and girly charm. Starting with her role in Oh My Ghost, where her ghost-possessed flirty and coy character made everyone, not just Chef, fall for her. She’s turning heads again in the currently airing drama Strong Woman Do Bong Soon with her extremely cute demeanors and whiny banters with Park Hyung Sik.
Kim Seul Gi
Maybe because she started her career as a gag woman in Korea’s SNL, or maybe because she played characters with kooky personalities, Kim Seul Gi is downright hilarious in a sassy and outlandish way. She doesn’t mind coming off as a bit crazy and totally commits in her scenes. Some of her most memorable characters are the obsessive editor in Flower Boy Next Door, the spunky high schooler in Splash Splash Love, and the man-eater ghost in Oh My Ghost.
Jang Nara
Jang Nara has done quite a long list of romantic comedies in her long career: from her first drama Successful Story of a Bright Girl, the divisive My Love Patzzi, to her more recent projects like Fated to Love You and One More Happy Ending. Jang Nara has the “girl next door” image that makes her super relatable, and reminds you of that friend who’s just a tad slow and a tad ditzy, so she always makes a fool out of herself.
Gong Hyo Jin
Gong Hyo Jin is a connoisseur of picking weird and quirky female characters in rom-coms, and someone who definitely deserves to be on this list. Despite not having the slapstick style of acting that most Korean comedies embrace, she has developed her own class of klutz and borderline black humor over the years. Some of the funniest Gong Hyo Jin works include The Greatest Love, Master’s Sun, and Jealousy Incarnate.
Shin Min Ah
Popularly known as the small faced beauty, Shin Min Ah is an actress with a sense of innocent playfulness that is very refreshing. She is extremely good at portraying energetic, optimistic, and no nonsense heroines that are extremely easy to fall in love with, like those in Arang and the Magistrate, My Girlfriend is a Nine-tailed Fox, and more recently, Oh My Venus. It also helps that her facial expressions often combine cuteness with a bit of cleverness and sass.
Han Groo
Strictly speaking, Han Groo may have only done one rom-com drama, but it’s one that left such a deep impression that can be career-defining. Her portrayal of the unfortunate heroine in who always ends up in the most ridiculous situations in Marriage Not Dating is impeccable. Her humor is the kind that makes you want to laugh, yet feel embarrassed and bad for her at the same time. It’s safe to say that she has the ability to make any comedy a success.
