It’s an unarguable fact that Kdramas and hallyu in general have the best looking people in television showbiz. But there are a lot of reasons why we love Kdramas beyond just the pretty faces. If you’re a longtime fan of hallyu, chances are one or more of the following reasons got you hooked to Kdramas.
Picture-Perfect Moments
No other entertainment franchise does moments like k-dramas. I mean they can try, but they won’t do it quite like. For every emotional highlight in any scene in a drama, you can be sure that there will be everything from panning shots and drone shots to music crescendos, lighting effects, and tears or stares to heighten the effect of the moment. For an example, I’ll refer to every scene in the drama “Heirs” where the song; “Love is the Moment” was sang.
Emotion-Filled Acting
There seems to be a never ending stream of pretty yet skilled actors and actresses that imprint their characters into our minds. Whether it be silliness, quirkiness, sadness, sassiness, kindness, or evilness, the Kdrama world never lacks memorable acting performances. Though other countries have strong actors too, none seem to match Kdrama actors on conveying detailed spectrum of emotions, particularly the heart-wrenching kind.
Impeccable Fashion
One thing that I absolutely love and admire about the Korean fashion scene in particular is how it manages to combine Western and traditional Eastern styles together to create its own eclectic type of high fashion. Dramas are one of the avenues to portray this fashion style to the fullest, and sometimes even used as a tool for total transformation of the main characters.
Beautiful OST’s
If you’re like me, you got introduced to the amazing world of Kpop by listening to drama OSTs. They’re usually perfectly paired with a type of scene from the drama where the lyrics help convey the thoughts of the characters at that moment. Most Kdramas have such great OSTs, ranging from heartfelt ballads to energizing idol pop songs, that you’ll find yourself watching a scene over and over again just to immerse yourself in the moment both in visual and sound.
Endless Humor
Unless a drama is solely in a genre where humor doesn’t really make any sense, chances are it will have some funny moments, even if just a little bit. With animated acting, exaggerated expressions and speech, and unique sound effects to punctuate the scene, Kdramas always deliver a huge dose of laughter. One of the reasons why I prefer watching comedies and rom-com dramas is that my very first drama experience was extremely hilarious (Boys Over Flowers).
Pretty Faces
Last but not least are the pretty faces. Typically, most if not all of the main characters in Kdramas could pass for high quality eye candies — or a real life barbie doll. It’s borderline freaky how good (read perfect) actors look in most dramas. It’s easy to fall in love with the glossy, colorful characters dressed in impeccable fashion, who grace our screens whenever we watch dramas. This is why we often will stick to a drama and finish it, even if the plot is less than ideal.
