Another ballad royalty of Super Junior is back to tug at heartstrings this spring. Exactly a year after Yesung‘s first solo album was released, he’s here again with second mini-album, Spring Falling. Yesung is known for his warm vocals and excellent emotional delivery, so get ready to feel cozy as he serenades us with heartwarming tracks from Spring Falling.
Track 1 – 봄날의 소나기 (Paper Umbrella)
Title track Paper Umbrella begins with gloomy piano that is later joined by strings quartet during the chorus. The vocal arrangement, particularly the low notes, has a 70s ballad vibe to it that emphasizes the sad feelings that the song is trying to invoke in the listener. Paper Umbrella is a perfect pick whenever you’re in need of a beautifully sung and healing ballad.
Track 2 – 겨울잠 (Hibernation)
Hibernation is an acoustic guitar based mid-tempo track with dreamy synths and chimes. The beat is subtle, allowing Yesung’s soft vocals with hidden playfulness to shine through, complementing this laid back number appropriately.
Track 3 – 그대뿐인지 (All But You)
The next track, All But You, slows things down while Yesung sings in a nearly whisper-like way. Unlike the other more distinguishing songs on Spring Falling, this one is more of your typical acoustic guitar ballad that you hear playing on the radio in the wee hours of the night, nothing special to note.
Track 4 – Fly (번지점프) (Bungee Jump)
Another acoustic guitar-based track follows quickly, this time being more upbeat than the previous songs. Bungee Jump soon turns into a soft rock and power ballad crossover that helps it stand out from the rest of the album in a good way.
Track 5 – 그때로 (At the Time)
Collaborating with Super Junior bandmate, Kyuhyun, At the Time is an easy listening mellow track. What I like most about it is the simplicity of the composition. No high notes, no overpowering beat, just plain smooth and silky vocals of Yesung and Kyuhyun gracing your ears.
Track 6 – 비눗방울 (So Close Yet So Far)
Spring Falling ends with a sorrowful OST-like number, So Close Yet So Far. So Close Yet So Far is a power ballad that highly emphasizes Yesung’s singing capabilities and broad vocal range through belting high notes that shined gloriously in this track.
