The boys of VIXX are back at it again with yet another mythical, dark album Hades, named after the Greek god of the underworld. This is the second album of their Greek god trilogy following the previous album Zelos in April. True to its title, Hades opened strong with ominous and theatrical sounds that were unique to VIXX’s style and told a perfect story as if watching a movie unfold before your eyes. Though unfortunately it lacked a bit of consistency towards the end.
Track 1 – Fantasy
Hades begins with Fantasy, which is indeed filled with whimsical and haunting drama in the melody and backtrack composition. There is a strong sense of danger expressed through chorus vocals, heavy orchestra instruments, and an angst sung through the boys’ belting harmonious voices. I particularly like the piano intro and outro that adds a layer of beautiful bleakness to complete the song’s tragic mood.
Track 2 – Love Me Do
Up next is Love Me Do, a solemn dance pop track, which sounds like a weird combo, but trust me, it totally works. The boys’ airy falsetto vocals and the occasional dramatic piano chords add to the seriousness of the song, which contrasts nicely with the upbeat and bouncy electronic beats. The result is a perfect juxtaposition of interesting and unique sounds.
Track 3 – 나비 효과 (Butterfly Effect)
Butterfly Effect kicks off with a jazzy intro, followed by soft melody, smooth vocals, and sporadic twinkle sounds to hint at the magic of butterfly transformations. This silky pop ballad is a relaxing number coming off of the previous songs and almost suggests a sense of salvation from the underground darkness of Hades, which is a great way to end the album from a storytelling perspective. Unfortunately, the melody is not catchy and rather forgettable.
