The attention grabbing rookie group Up10tion is back with their third EP, Spotlight. After debuting in 2015, this 10 member idol group rolled out all new seven tracks to show listeners what they are made of. With a mix of genres, Up10tion explores dance, funk, and many hip hop infused tunes. Though Spotlight is an album somewhat inconsistent in its enjoyableness, Up10tion wants to prove they are a group of newcomers shining best in pop and R&B.
Track 1 – Spotlight
The opening track, Spotlight, is an instrumental with a mysterious vibe. With intense bass and a groovy beat, the track adds a touch of a trap beat that makes it easier to dance to. In less than 60 seconds, tension builds with many different sounds that gets you excited to hear what’s to come.
Track 2 – 나한테만 집중해 (Attention)
Attention, the title track, is a very endearing song. Full of horns and brass, there is an engaging groove that is consistent across the song. The backtrack balances well with the vocals and rapping, allowing them to come through and shine. Although there was never a true climax in the song, Attention has a fresh concept for an idol group.
Track 3 – Stay
Featuring a lively acoustic guitar, Stay is a soft track with a nice tempo. This is a funky R&B ditty with an attractive blend of vocals and rapping. While showcasing an impressive vocal performance, Up10tion is asking a girl to ‘stay’ with them forever. Although Stay had many great elements, it is still a little forgettable.
Track 4 – 아무렇지 않은 척 (Like Nothing Happened)
Up next is a ballad carried by a rhythmic and jazzy piano, as well as a welcoming sense of groove. Like Nothing Happened reveals a new side to Up10tion on this album. There is a pleasing buildup to the chorus, which picks up in tempo with playful synths and more of a hip hop rhythm. With enjoyable lyrical melodies, Like Nothing Happened is an awesome fusion of genres and a prominent track on Spotlight.
Track 5 – Yes or No
Yes or No has a retro feel with upbeat raps and cool vocals. With distinct and fast-paced percussion, this track is very chic and has tons of style. However, it becomes a little monotonous during the chorus and hook.
Track 6 – 기적을 바란다 (I Wish A Miracle)
A sweet ballad is what you find in I Wish A Miracle. Although the vocals are stable, this ballad is bland and like any other ballad you would find thrown in an idol album. The one thing that helps add more interest here is the faster paced rap towards the end.
Track 7 – 보일 듯 말 듯 (Cherish)
Partnering with Yuju of Gfriend, Cherish, is a playful duet with Up10tion member Sunyoul. This mid-tempo piece is fun while showcasing both singers vocal abilities. With a catchy beat, Cherish ended the mini album on a positive note.
