Unit Black is the first promotional unit that came out of Boys24, a Korean pre-debut boy group formed by CJ E&M through a survival show of the same name. The eight rookie boys debuted in April of this year with their first singles album Steal Your Heart. Steal Your Heart is a tone-setting album for Unit Black, with strongly hip hop flavored tracks that show just how much swagger these newcomers have. However, the boys still need a special x-factor to differentiate themselves further from other like-minded boy group acts in the Kpop industry.
Track 1 – 뺏겠어 (Steal Your Heart)
Title track Steal Your Heart kicks off the album with trendy tropical house beats complemented by light contemporary synths. Frankly, the melody during the verse is not impressionable, however the groovy chorus and the boys flawless falsettos during the bridge more than make up for it.
Track 2 – Candy Shop
Next track Candy Shop sheds the nonchalance of Steal Your Heart and ops for more edginess with heavier EDM hip hop beats and a lower-pitched vocal delivery. It’s certainly a stylish track that hits the mark in terms of encompassing the mainstream Kpop vibes, but the overly monotonous progression wears on you after a while.
Track 3 – Boom
Boom dabbles in yet another genre-mixing playground. With jazzy trumpet sounds, clap-like rhythmic beat, and funky tribal drumbeats, Boom refreshingly sits between hip hop and acid pop. This is also a re-interpretation by Unit Black from the original Boys24 live performance, though with much more hip hop swagger added to the mix.
