The six men of U-KISS are back with their eleventh mini-album, Stalker, nearly a year and half since their last Korean release. This time, U-KISS returns with a more matured sound. The sextuplet experimented with many sounds and genres in Stalker, though largely resulted in standard numbers not hugely memorable. But they did something else few idol groups do, donated a portion of the mini-album’s proceeds to charity.
Track 1 – Favorite Girl
Favorite Girl set things moving in Stalker with a smooth and catchy beat. This track is infused with an upbeat hip hop rhythm, by AOMG’s producer Cha Cha Malone. Favorite Girl is a nice, calm song, but it sounds quite mundane; there is nothing notable.
Track 2 – Stalker
Changing vibes, Stalker is a proactive dance track, as well as the title track of the album. It provides more interest than the previous song by adding an exciting synth bass. The vocal performances are nice and displays different techniques like a whispering style and power vocals. However, this track also left me a little underwhelmed. Nonetheless, the live performance adds the extra zest that is missing from the song itself.
Track 3 – 눈을 감아도 (When I Close My Eyes)
Slowing things down, Stalker turns to a ballad in When I Close My Eyes. This is an emotional ballad where you can feel the sincerity and honesty in the lyrics from their vocal delivery. The singing in When I Close My Eyes is both strong and stable, truly showcasing the vocal talents of U-KISS. The lyrical guitar really helps move the song along and partners very well with the melody.
Track 4 – Heartless
Carrying a strong, repetitive drum beat, Heartless is the most impressive track on Stalker. The mesmerizing guitar adds a hint of mystery to the track and works well with the vocal progressions. There are many rise and falls in Heartless that keeps you wanting more. This is a dance track that makes you feel the emotions of the lyrics.
Track 5 – Take It Slow
Becoming more upbeat and heartwarming, Take It Slow is bound to put a smile on your face. It’s the most R&B influenced song on the album. While Take It Slow is your typical, cheery boyband love song, the rap stands out most. It’s a tune to listen to on a day when you just want to chill out.
