My nostalgia of Super Junior continues as they release the second part of their ten year anniversary album Magic. Besides the original ten tracks from Devil, there are four new songs reviewed below. Turns out, the new additions on Magic mostly extend the positive feelings I have from the Devil album, though not nearly as creative and stay within the safe zones of Super Junior’s usual music style.
Track 1 – Magic
Piano chords plus rhythmic drum beats make the title song Magic another disco inspired electro dance song. Half way through, the addition of trumpets give it a 70’s big band retro jazz twist as well. Magic is overall a nice catchy piece that closely represents Super Junior’s color and music direction while adding just a tad of new flavor.
Track 4 – 놈, 놈, 놈 (You Got It)
You Got It is a funky hip hop song with most of the verse rapped. Personally, I’m not a fan of this song as the background drum beats and synth seem to be a bit of a hodgepodge and do not match the style of the song very well. You Got It sounds somewhat messy with no clear indication of what direction it’s going towards.
Track 5 – 도로시 (Dorothy)
Dorothy is a soft and emotion-filled ballad track with a lot of references to Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. Besides the melodic violin instrumentals, the boys’ sorrowful yet harmonious vocals really make the heart-wrenching melody come alive. Though ballads are clearly a Super Junior K.R.Y. signature, the beautiful melody of Dorothy makes it stand out as one of their more memorable songs.
Track 6 – Sarang♥
Sarang is a pop dance infused ballad song performed by Heechul and Leeteuk — their first ever collaboration as a duo. Despite having a nice tune thanks to the melodic violin and acoustic guitar, Sarang is also stuffed with weighty drum beats, light percussion beats, and even a bit of synth, which comes off as overwhelming and chaotic over time. It’s not the cleanest track musically, but still a good listen.
