Known as one of Super Junior’s best vocalists with a uniquely delicate voice, Ryeowook has released his first solo album titled The Little Prince. Following the footsteps of bandmate Kyuhyun, Ryeowook is the second SuJu member to release a solo album. In The Little Prince, Ryeowook’s talent as a musician and vocalist is not only shown in his ballad specialties, but also shines through a number of upbeat peppy tracks. Even though I didn’t have high expectations for Ryeowook’s solo debut, I was more than glad to be proven wrong.
Track 1 – Like a Star
A soothing lullaby like calming ballad song with gentle piano instrumental and Ryeowook’s tender vocals, Like a Star is a soft but heartwarming intro to The Little Prince. The enchanting melody embodies the yearning that Ryeowook feels for his past love who still shines like a star in his heart.
Track 2 – 어린왕자 (The Little Prince)
Title track The Little Prince starts rather quiet in a capella style with just Ryeowook’s whispering voice, then comes in the sentimental piano and winding violin riffs during the chorus. The song’s brilliant arrangement unfolds even more during the second half where the full orchestra instrumental accompaniment dramatically elevates the emotional intensity of this stunning ballad, leaving you deep in thought.
Track 3 – 그대 (Hello)
Hello takes a sharp turn from the previous track into funky, retro swing territory. The playful bass, guitar, and occasional appearance of flute all add together to give Hello a cheery spirit. The most impressive thing about this track is Reyowook’s vocals. Known for his ballad works, I didn’t know he could digest such a groovy and lighthearted piece as well as he did.
Track 4 – 알 수도 있는 사람 (People You May Know)
Back to the rueful side of things, People You May Know is an acoustic ballad number with an interesting modern day perspective in the lyrics. It describes the longing feelings for an ex-lover from seeing her being suggested under “people you may know” category in social media. It’s another heart-melting melody, but not as memorable as the previous tracks.
Track 5 – Foxy Girl
Foxy Girl amps up the tempo and mood again with mid-tempo rhythmic beats and disco-infused dance pop composition. Featuring a rare rap segment in this fun track, Ryeowook’s vocals also become a bit more sensual to match the sexy aura of the song. However, the progression of the song is a bit flat and blend for my taste.
Track 6 – 품 (Poom)
The Little Prince album indeed ends on Ryeowook’s forte — a pop ballad tune with deep emotions, Poom. It’s a touching song written from the perspective of a son who finally realized that he’s been straying away from his mother after growing up. The power combo of Ryeowook’s earnest vocals and the heartfelt lyrics is sure to strike a chord with many listeners.
