Showing a softer side than previous albums, Red Velvet recently released The Velvet, their second mini-album. These girls were able to strip down their typical upbeat, peppy dance style to show more of their feminine charm. With The Velvet, this fivesome proves that they can be delicate and smooth, just like velvet.
Track 1 – 7월 7일 (One of These Nights)
One of These Nights is the title track and opens the album with a warm ballad. The orchestra and dreamy piano lend well to Red Velvet’s R&B influenced vocals. The vocal delivery and skillful harmonization of all five members adds a sense of mourning to the track. With the help of an addictive snare drum rhythm, One of These Nights picks up with a hip hop drum beat towards the middle. The song is a solid representation of the vocal talent of Red Velvet.
Track 2 – Cool Hot Sweet Love
Having a flavor that’s more of what people would expect from Red Velvet, Cool Hot Sweet Love is a very stylish and unique sounding song. The croons work well with the instrumentation of the track. There’re layers of prominent drums, soulful pianos, and playful synth washes which make up a fun and urban R&B number.
Track 3 – Light Me Up
Light Me Up is a classy, mid-tempo R&B influenced ballad track full of emotion. There are sections of syrupy speaking that breakup the vocals nicely. With the assistance of a harp, the bluesy vocals flow seamlessly over rhythmic drums. There is an unforgettable groove found in Light Me Up.
Track 4 – 처음인가요 (First Time)
First Time is another ballad, but it offers its own flavor with each member’s voice clearly distinguished by their unique tones. First Time isn’t overly produced which allows the vocals to shine even more. Other than showing off the group’s vocals, the track is a little characterless and easily gets overshadowed by the album’s other songs.
Track 5 – 장미꽃 향기는 바람에 날리고 (Rose Scent Breeze)
The Velvet wraps up with another ballad in Rose Scent Breeze. This tune starts off with great musicality, beginning with elegant piano and strings. The effortless and emotional vocals soon commence and help push the song along. Rose Scent Breeze perks up at its climax thanks to an electric guitar solo. The vocals are smooth and simple, closing the album on a high note.
