Red Velvet – ‘Rookie’ Album Review

Red Velvet goes retro with their EP Rookie. In this EP, they continue with their tradition of releasing experimental and idiosyncratic tracks. Although the title track could have been better picked, and some of the songs could have been better developed, Rookie is a solid EP that is a cornucopia of good, if not great, songs that are reminiscent of the yesteryear.

Track 1 – Rookie

Rookie is a funky pop ditty with a quirky beat. However, there seems to be little to no thought on the production of Rookie, as it’s so monotonous and repetitive on the ears, making it pale in comparison to their more sophisticated title tracks such as Dumb Dumb.

Track 2 – Little Little

Little Little is more suitable to be the title track, with the dreamy beat and Red Velvet’s captivating vocals serenading you all the way through. Its aurally pleasing nature is one that’s suitable for times when you are alone and just want to destress.

Track 3 – Happily Ever After

Making you more cheerful by many notches, Happily Ever After is a fun bubblegum pop track. The loud synths that are on full display during the chorus are a complement to Red Velvet’s youthfulness, though the melody itself falls a tad flat and could use a bit more variation.

Track 4 – Talk To Me

Talk To Me is a slower, but more aurally pleasing urban R&B dance pop track. The crossover between modernity and tradition is one that’s noteworthy and keeps the track interesting. Talk To Me is more avant-garde than the other songs in this album due to this.

Track 5 – Body Talk

Body Talk is a hodgepodge of loud retro and hip pop sounds, making things quite confusing. Like Rookie, Body Talk seems like a song producers did not spend much time on. Not only that, though the song has an enticing backbeat, it lacks a catchy hook to keep the audience captivated.

Track 6 – 마지막 사랑 (Last Love)

Last Love is a solo ballad by Wendy, and it truly puts the spotlight on her mellifluous vocals. The delicate, dainty melody is a perfect pair with Wendy’s emotion. This is one song that is just one of the few that are proof that Wendy is deserving of a solo debut.

I loved the entire album. But then, opinions differ a lot.
