After a year of exploring the sexy and seductive side of Kpop, the ladies of Rainbow are here once again with a colorful assortment of dance pop songs. Amidst the intense battle for girl group supremacy comes their comeback mini-album, Prism —an ultimate testament to everyone that they know how to have some funky retro fun.
Track 1 – 보고 싶다는 그 말도 (Pretend)
Pretend is a slow-tempo ballad that starts off with a sad piano that evokes the feeling of having a troubled mind. Though it does showcase Rainbow’s powerful vocals, it’s mostly a typically composed track that sounds like what many girl groups have done before.
Track 2 – Whoo
Whoo is a fun title track with an 80’s vibe, highlighted by playful guitar riffs and a cheering chorus. But while I’m a huge fan of upbeat and energizing songs, Whoo didn’t really stay on my mind for long with its lack of strong hooks.
Track 3 – Black & White
Black & White starts off making you think it’s just another ballad, but then it suddenly hits you with its jammin’ beat, funky electric guitar, and even rich violins during the chorus. What I love most about this track is the powerful ending, which is full of Rainbow’s belting vocals and pinpoint falsettos.
Track 4 – Click!
A super fun, groovy, and jazzy song, Click! sounds like an authentic 80’s produced track that you can swing dance to. I think that this track perfectly shows off Rainbow’s skill in retro musicality.
Track 5 – Eye Contact
Eye Contact is a smooth and funky track with a bit of seductiveness in the vocals and melody. It’s a nicely paced, chill song to finish out Prism.
Track 6 – Whoo (Inst.)
