The 10 member super rookies, Pentagon, are the latest boy group to debut out of Cube Entertainment. Pentagon is the result of the survival show, Pentagon Maker. Their self-titled debut album, Pentagon, is a solid mix of genres and showcases the group’s talents well. After some fine tuning, Pentagon will be a group to look out for.
Track 1 – Wake Up (Intro)
With a forceful and energetic opening, Wake Up is a hip hop track with strong drum beats. This track has great vocals and an interesting rap style that goes against the crazy electronic-sounding instrumental. Wake Up is definitely an attention getting track, too bad it’s just an intro and not a full song.
Track 2 – Pentagon
Pentagon is a track with a slow and mellow vibe but is still full of energy. The song starts with a baritone rap that sets the mood, but soon becomes more intense from the vocals. As Pentagon progresses, a hip hop-inspired drum beat elevates during the chorus. There is a high pitched rap that comes in that is slightly off putting — it doesn’t fit the vibe of the overall track. However, the passionate vocals really carry this track and keeps the rating high.
Track 3 – Gorilla
A whimsical feel from playful brass makes up the title track, Gorilla. This is a hip hop song with a persistent beat. Gorilla is a masculine track full of mischief that is perfect for this group of boys. Be that as it may, having different elements that come and go throughout the song is distracting and is hard to listen to at times.
Track 4 – 미지근해 (Lukewarm)
Lukewarm begins with a unique fusion of synths that has a futuristic vibe. This is a fun, groovy track with an upbeat rhythm and an atmosphere remindful of house music. There’s a nice balance between singing and rapping in Lukewarm. This track shows off Pentagon’s charms best and is surely not “lukewarm”.
Track 5 – Smile
A very rich sounding R&B song can be found in Smile. With an upbeat piano and melodic harmony, Smile is a nice song on the ears. This light-hearted track showcases the group’s vocal abilities nicely and is one of the most memorable tracks on the mini album.
Track 6 – 귀 좀 막아줘 (Organic Song)
The mini album mellows out with a gentle hip hop track, Organic Song. This number allows the rappers to shine with the assistance of a deep drum beat with snaps. With a dreamlike feel, Organic Song is a nice change to show a different side these boys are able to attack.
Track 7 – You Are
The album closes with a very pretty ballad in You Are. This ballad lets Pentagon’s vocalists have a time to shine on their own. To compliment the amazing vocals, there’s an interesting drum beat that’s nice and light.
